    Vaio and wireless internet

Just obtained a secondhand Sony Vaio laptop VGN-A197P everything is fine except my lack of internet connection.
I have a wireless D-Link router (DSL-G604T). My main pc and my daughters HP laptop connect fine but
    not this one, so far!
Have checked the obvious items but believe problem stems from the encryption key.
I use 128bit WEP so have to enter 26 Hex characters.
If I click view available networks I get my network and a print server one obviously somewhere in the local area. Clicking connect results in it saying it is connecting but no end result.
My network is set as the preferred network with automatic connection.
It tells me that this network ie mine needs a network key, fair enough.
I then enter my 26 digit key, also confirm same key then click ok.
If I then go and look at what I have just entered it has reverted back to an eight digit number.
I cannot get it to hold the 26 digit number.
The adapter is an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG

Have heard that these may be suspect being used in a Vaio with either WEP or WPA installed, not convinced though that this is my problem.

    Any pointers gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Re: Vaio and wireless internet

Just as I read your message I did what you were suggesting. Connection with internet now okay. Do believe the problem lies with the Intel 2200BG in the Sony as others have reported the same with security enabled especially WEP. Might get rid of the 2200BG anyway as not impressed with its performance. I get a low signal in the study and the loungs and b****r all else where. Interesting to see I get a selection of other networks mind. Sky in the garage, BT in the study too and Netgear outside the front door Best I can get is a reading of Signal Strength low anyway so maybe best option to forget the 2200BG and buy a PCMCIA card version.I do note though with the PCMCIA versions I cannot find one with an external antenna where as some of the USB ones do have one. Judging by my signal strength I possibly need that.
    Thanks
