    Unbelievable (VM rant)

I had, until now, a glowing experience of Virgin.net, now VirginMedia. Great adsl speeds, good service etc.

But now I'm mad. I know they have a fair usage policy - I know it can throttle you up to 75% and for 5 hours.. but no, what have they decided to do? Throttle me from 6mbps to 80kbps, and for a week.

I can't find that anywhere in their terms and conditions, or the website. The Witcher EE is nice, but the internet is more or less unusable in our household now

That seems real harsh, a whole *week!*

How do you know its been intentionally throttled and isn't just a network issue?

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

I thought it was a network issue at first, but chased it up with them and got an email saying I was being throttled down to 80kbps 4pm till midnight weekdays, 10am till midnight at weekends, for a week.

    Hello there,

We’ve noticed recently that you’ve been using your Virgin Media Broadband connection to upload and download a lot more than we’d expect.

While we’re pleased that you’re enjoying using our broadband service, when someone downloads an unusually large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the internet speed for other users. So, to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we’ll need to moderate the speeds of your service as mentioned in our Acceptable Use Policy.

    How this affects you
We’ll be moderating the internet use on your account during peak times for the rest of this week (until Sunday night).
This means that from 4pm to midnight from Monday to Friday, and 10am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday your broadband service will be reduced from up to 8Mb to 80kbps (that’s just faster than a dial-up connection).
During these times you might want to stagger your use, so that you’re not doing everything in one go. Outside of these times, you’ll be able to use your service as normal, with speeds of up to 8Mb. If you’d like to find out a bit more about why we do this just click here.

Keeping track of what you’re using
To avoid this happening again, you can cut down on the amount you’re downloading at peak times and, after Sunday, we’ll put things on your account back to normal. To help keep track on this, there are lots of handy tools available on the internet which can tell you how much you’re downloading over a specific period.
If the next time we look at our users we notice that you’re still downloading more than we’d expect, we’ll just apply the usage restrictions again and let you know what’s happening.

Want to know more about our Acceptable Use Policy? Just click here to read the whole thing.

    The Virgin Media team
Not sure it's much of a story, everyone knows VM are crap. I had been a lonely voice of dissent.. no more.

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

kalniel, how much you downloading? lol.

When i was with VM they used to cap you down to 1/2 your max download speed, which I thought was ok. Capping it to 80 kb/s though, that is a bit harsh!

As I am a fellow downloader and live in a shared house, I use an application called netlimiter. I set it to download max at night and cap it to a lower rate in the day time so my house mates are not affected. Maybe you should look into this application so this won't happen again to you.

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

That is stupid. Mark my words - once this hits the big sites they are going to get some flack.

Its one thing throttling it in the evening, which I can understand provided the limits stay reasonable, but brining it down to barely above 56K modem speeds? I'm not sure how they can get away with selling it as broadband in this case.

I'm going to have a read over their T&C's over the next few days and see if they have this covered. I would seriously consider letting trading standards know about this either way so they can take a close look at it.

Have you been using it as much as they have say (not that I think it should make a difference)?...if not, your modem might have been cloned.

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

Are you using ADSL? i know for normal cable they throttle 2mb to 1mb and 75% for others(10mb/20mb) so 8mb to 80k is wrong since they advertise the new limits. If that was me id be peed off and calling them all the words in the book, they cant surely put you down to dial up speeds ITS NOT USEABLE FOR INTERNET USE, how many adds are on websites now adays? imagin dial up on that. Perhaps Trading standards need a call? or the people who manage it (OFCOM or what ever).

Even if its ADSL (which it probably is reading it back now), 80k is a joke...

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

80k is beyond a joke, i could probably send data quicker by running there .

Hopefully you get this sorted, im with virgin and fear this will be the norm and affect me which isnt fair .
During these times you will stagger to use your connection
    Fixed.

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

What have you been using the connection for?

And I presume you're on an ADSL package - something I'm less familiar with as I'm in a cable area.

Or if you wanna PM me any info that's fine.

When you're paying for the maximum package a provider offers, it's rather rude of them to throttle heavy users in this way. At worst they should prioritise traffic for the non-heavy users and let those who've set off the 'trip' fight for the remaining bandwidth - but then that would require QoS hardware; something Virgin doesn't seem to have any sophisticated level of.

    Re: Unbelievable (VM rant)

Oh my god... 80kbps?! That's utterly disgusting!! I'd be looking for a way to do them for breach of contract and get out fast. With my old ISP it simply wasn't possible for me to hav speeds of 80kbps - the lowest setting they could use (for troubleshooting only) was twice that speed.

With my new ISP (Be*) I don't have to worry about speed or FUPs though.
