Dell B130 XP Reinstall Internet not working.

    Hey guys,

I am reinstalling a Dell B130 Laptop for a friend of mine. I did a standard XP install from a normal disk instead of using the Dell reinstall thinking I would be getting away from a lot of the bloatware that comes with the standard install. Little did I know that I would be causing myself more headaches than it's worth.

Windows installed fine, and seemed to be working alright. She doesn't have a built in wireless adapter and uses a USB Linksys WUSB54GSC wireless adapter. I installed the drivers from the disk and it seems to work fine. It can locate and connect to wireless networks. The network even reached a connected status, not just 'limited connectivity' like it usually does when there are issues. However, it doesn't seem to be receiving an IP address from DHCP like it should. It says Invalid IP Address for the IP. It will wait a while and then say "Automatic Private Address" at which point nothing else will happen. I can't access any internet. The router has been restarted and works fine. I am currently accessing internet through it from my desktop. The laptop has been restarted with no improvement. I tried using a cable to connect it to the router but I can't even get the LAN to show up. I'm guessing I need to install the drivers for the NIC so this isn't a surprise. I'm going to try to get NIC drivers and then do a Windows Update while wired and see if anything improves.

Does anyone here have any other ideas for me to pursue though as I don't really expect this to work?

    Thanks in advance.

    John

Installing the wired NIC drivers will allow you to connect to the internet. Odds on the wireless router has some form of security on that is preventing an ip address being assigned through DHCP, try turning MAC filtering etc off and trying again. If this works then make sure you allow the MAC of the wireless adapter in the wireless router config.

Re: Dell B130 XP Reinstall Internet not working.

First off thanks for the reply Splash. I have not gotten the NIC drivers on the laptop yet. I was out for a bit but have a little more info I figured I would post while I work on NIC drivers.

When I try to connect from the laptop, it seems like the router is trying to give it an IP.

    192.168.11.7 00:1F:33:72:40:50 Vista2007 47:57:49 Auto
    192.168.11.3 00:1A:70:A7:A0:A4 javier 0:0:28 Auto

Under DHCP I see these clients. The first is my desktop, the second is her laptop. For some reason the lease time is only one minute on her laptop. She seems to have an IP reserved by the router. I had MAC filtering on but have it off now and the same problem. I have tried her wireless adapter on my pc and it works.

I figured I would post what I know for now and continue to work on those drivers and possibly try using my adapter on her laptop.

    Thanks again.

In which case... odd. The MAC of the wireless NIC is clearly being assigned an address through DHCP (as the MAC should be maintained regardless of the machine it was connected to).

Remove the DHCP reservation for 00:1A:70:A7:A0:A4 and give it another shot.

Wow, I got it. I was trying to put my wireless adapter in her computer but I needed to install a microsoft update(KB822603) so I loaded it up on a USB drive and installed it. I installed my wireless drivers and it worked fine. I switched back to hers to check and it also works. I guess that update was the issue. Thanks for your help Splash! I should be able to get the rest from here.

EDIT: To clarify, when installing the drivers for my wireless adapter it prompted me to first install that update before it would install the wireless drivers.

Result. I'd take an image of it when you get everything setup though, save you the hassle of going through it again
