Looking for Wireless Router Model to replace the BeBox

    Hi all,

I am on the BE broadband right now and the BeBox I am using is the Thompson 585 v7. The BeBox works so far so good but I am not that satisfy with the wireless performance especially when I need to copy large amount of files from my notebook to the desktop. I kindly like to ask if there is any good wireless router +modem recommendation that works well with Be?

    My usage:
Internet / YouTube / BitTorrent / XBox Live

BTW, Be didn't send me the login/pw for the ADSL2+ connection, do I need to ask for them if I am leaving the BeBox? anyone tried the "ZyXEL P660HWP"??

    Thank you.

    Howard

be connection doesnt need user/pw. just requires the correct mac adress to be connected to the line - this can usually be changed on adsl routers. have a google, and you'll see. I've done it with a netgear dg834g - and actually got better sync speeds than with bebox

the bebox is terrible to "be" honest but I think they expect you to change it.

I have a Draytek 2820, works fine these days. was a bit hmmm, iffy to start with but firmwares have sorted it. supports wireless n draft 2, thats up to 300MBits/s, or you could use your bebox and those powerline adapters? cheaper. or a wireless n access point?

'Be' warned - KEEP the bebox around.
Cause you'll need it if you ever move house/change ISP.
They ask for it back and charge you ~ £100 if you can't provide it.

Re: Looking for Wireless Router Model to replace the BeBox

I don't like ZyXel stuff, had 3 routers of theirs and they were all a bit pants (serious issues with the amount of TCP/IP connections it could handle which does affect you when using BT).

I would have a look at the Netgear DG834N, a lot of people who use Be use this router and say it works brilliantly.

You don't need a log-in/password for Be so you wont get one.

Important piece of advice, also you need it for diagnostics stuff so their techies can connect to it and look when you require help.

Best choice would be the Netgear DG834GT and the DG834N as it's directly compatible (has the broadcom chip which the bebox has) and with custom firmware allows modification of the SNR to tweak your speed, much more stable holds the syncs longer and resyncs quickly. It's £60 though but you can get one off ebay or a sky branded one and reflash it for like £30-40.

You don't need a password for Be.

Just need to know some settings VPI=0 VLC=101 and for the netgear it must be set to LLC based. If you have a static ip given to you by be you have to enter that in too and then you're set, otherwise it's just a matter of plugging it in and setting the right settings then on the internet you go.

IIRC everything except the LLU service requires a username/password

I have O2 Home Access (which is Be) and as my exchange has not yet been unbundled I had to ring O2 to get a username and password#

EDIT: I also switched to a DG834GT - I had one for 3 or so years previously and can't fault it.
