    Wireless Weirdness.?

    Ok,
Last night I was playing CounterStrke, when all of a sudden the internet connection goes down.
    Upon investigation it seems like settings within my router have altered;

The SSID has changed, the Channel has changed, and the last digit of the MAC address has changed.

Also, when I attepmt to connect it, I get connected to someone else's network...?
    Has my router been hacked?

What do I do from here? I'm a bit new to all this wireless stuff.

    Cheers,
    Skeem

I suspect it has been compromised, it doesn't just change for fun - I would do a hard reset on it and make sure you do a firmware update once back in.

the MAC change is odd. I am guessing you had the default password on the router? If not then that is very odd.

I would do a little investigation first but pull it from the wall / modem so they have no connectivity to the internet.

What other wireless networks are in your area?

No, I changed the password from default. I also had WPA2 encryption on. :/
Yes, I have pulled it from the wall

this doesn't sound right to me!

It would take a lot to get into that router.

can you get into the router yourself?

    Re: Wireless Weirdness.?

If I try to connect to it, it ums and ahs for a moment, then connects to someone elses network (I live in an apartment block), but I can't use thier network to access the internet.

Talking to a collegue, he reckons that people on the same WAN can push thier firmware into other routers connected to it, and thus change settings to meet their own dastardly ends.. seems like a big vunerability, is this likely?

I doubt that's true. Do you use homeplug by any chance?

No, but I imagine it's far more secure than wireless. But expensive..

[edit] Actually, it seems they've come down a lot lately..

They're only more secure if other people can't physically connect to the same mains supply as you. If you live in an apartment block / block of flats you're sharing electrical wires with a lot of people.

    Re: Wireless Weirdness.?

yes, thats why I asked. People in apartments who use homeplug can find that other users can get onto their network.

I am at a loss as to how this has been done.
