Amazing the difference a driver makes

I've been having really bad connection issues this evening on my main PC.

First I thought it was my Internet connection (Nildram) being slow, but then pages from my NAS box were slow too.

Decided to re-boot everything, figuring the cheap ass Belkin router was playing up. Still no good, in fact I think it was worse. Fired up my laptop and was downloading at about 600kb/sec without blinking. OK, so it's not the Internet connection or the router, perhaps the gigabit switch is going. Nope, plugging directly into the router is the same.

I was starting to think it was the switch in the router or the on board NIC when i realised that Vista had presented me with a new Realtec driver to install this afternoon. Dived into device manager and rolled the driver back (first time I've tried to do that actually) and all is back to normal.

Pain in the arse that was. Glad it wasn't hardware related though, didn't want to have to buy another router or anything

It might not be a problem with the newer driver, per se, but with the network adapter settings.

Sometimes when upgrading a network driver, the speed or duplex settings can get reset, so it's always worth checking those.

For the few times that I've let Windows Update upgrade a hardware driver, I've never had a problem.

However, I always prefer to manually download and then update drivers.

You can download the latest RealTek drivers from their website.....

Perhaps you are right. Howeverit must have really screwed with the settings to go from 600KB/sec downloads in Opera to every web page timing out, MSN disconnecting and me not even able to reliably get to my own routers admin pages.

I'm still blaming the dodgy driver.
