    Hackable *ADSL* routers

After a conversaion over the weekend on the WRT54G with alternative firmwares I thought I would go and have a look.

Are there any out there that have the modem built in?

Otherwise I'm looking at about £80 for the router and a seperate modem. This will also chew up more power and take two sockets as well.

And considering I can get a Vigor 2700G for £95, the hacked version doesn't seem that appealing to an ADSL user.

EDIT: this is for replacing a Belkin POS router that i bought in an emergency (my old Netgear died)

none of the WRT flavours (openWRT, DD-WRT or Tomato) can cope with ADSL modems.

I reckon your best bet is to go with the Vigor

The Vigor will give you a lot of the functionality that you would get from running hacked firmware anyway.

    Re: Hackable *ADSL* routers

I probably wouldn't use a custom firmware to its fullest anyway, I would just like something more powerful than a regular consumer router gives you.

The main thing I miss from the Netgear I had was being able to specify the IP address the HDCP server issued to a particular MAC address. It meant I could keep everything on predictable IP addresses without having to actually specify them in the device. For instance, the router always gave my HTPC 10.0.0.10 regardless of when it joins the network.

    Re: Hackable *ADSL* routers

The Netgear DG384GT can be hacked with the DGteam firmware... can be had on ebay for less than a tenner with sky branding (that just gets removed when you flash)

    Re: Hackable *ADSL* routers

Thanks for that, although there is nothing on eBay at the moment.

Both the DGteam and UberGT projects don't look like they have progressed since this time last year which isn't very inspiring.

    Are you sure?
The WRT54 works with a ADSL normally (You just plug a modem into it). The modem does all the work getting it connected to the internet, I'm not sure why being ADSL should change that with the custom firmwares?
As far as I knew, the uplink port doesn't care what device is attached to it in this respect.

A post here seems to indicate it (Tomato) works fine on ADSL?

    Re: Hackable *ADSL* routers

Yeah, but thats the point, I don't want a seperate modem.

What Steve is saying is that none of the third part firmwares can handle ADSL routers, just "broadband" or cable routers.

Ah got ya, didn't realise you wanted it all in one (really...I should read posts better)

You can get some seriously small ADSL modems now though

    Re: Hackable *ADSL* routers

Read the first post again dude

It's not the size, it's the number of plugs, power usage of two bricks and the added complication of setting up multiple devices.

I'll get a Draytec when I eventually get round to it.

You really should read posts better

Original posters gripe about separate ADSL modem wasn't the size but taking up an extra electric socket and extra electricity ( although these devices run on very little juice, usually about 5Volts DC at say 500mA)
