Slow Wireless transfer Rate

I have a Linksys WRT54GL wired/wireless router with standard Firmware, connected to this is a Wired PC and a Wireless PC upstairs. The PCs are networked.

The Wireless PCI card is a Edimax EW-7128G (54mbs 802.11g)chosen as it has good Linux support.

Both PCs run Linux Ubuntu, problem is that I can only get a 2 megabytes per second file transfer rate between these 2PCs, I was hoping for between 3 and 4 mb per second maybe even more. Its fast enough to stream media but too slow to make large backups between the 2 PCs

The signal strength on the upstairs PC shows to vary from 94-100% on the network monitor.

Is there any way to get this faster?

I've heard about Tomato firmware for the router but I thought this only increases signal range.

Would a moe expensive wireless card be needed?

2MB/sec is about 16Mbps which is actually fairly decent on a 54Mbps wifi connection. Even though you are connected at 54Mbps due to wifi overhead and interference, actual performance will be half that at best.

If you want faster, you need the N standard for 100Mbps or higher, or use wired, the added hassle of routing and possibly drilling for cables is very worth it in the long run.

not ready to go upgrading my router yet, may have to think about cable option, problem is an ethernet cable will have to travel up a wall, so I would have to spend a day chasing a wall out and plastering it over to get that idea past the Boss (Wife).
