    O2 Broadband

After having broadband with BT for the past 4 years I decided to change to O2 broadband which costs me £10 per month for a 16mg+ line. The switch over took less than 5 days and O2 constantly sent me text updates throughout the period. Now enjoy my superfast adsl2 broadband....

    Re: O2 Broadband

My Dad has had BT Broadband for 4 years as well. Once he realised that the reason BBC iPlayer couldn't even stream shows between 6pm & midnight because BT throttle the connection so badly, he's finally realised that a new ISP is a good choice. Just got to wait for the contract to run out.

Good to hear that o2 broadband is good for you, I suggested changing to that because I have an o2 phone contract so it'll be only £7.50/month. Hopefully my Dad will appreciate saving £10/month for a better connection!

o2/Be* are proving to be rather good at what they're doing.

I'm syncing at the best rate I've had in 6 years and for £18, you really can't argue.

    Re: O2 Broadband

A few questions, if you don't mind:

    Do O2/Be throttle?

What sort of speed do you get on O2/Be (vs. what you should get)?

And how far away are you from the exchange to get that speed?

    Re: O2 Broadband

Switching to O2/Be is the best thing you can do IMHO.

150 Metres from the exchange and I get the full 16Mbps Down and 1.3Mbps Up in Manchester on O2's 16Mb service

Where I am in Brighton I used to get 9Mbps Down and 1.3Mbps Up on Be's 24Mb service before I switched to O2's 8Mb service (don't have the speeds yet) as I don't live there anymore and am only down for weekends. Thats 1.3K from the exchange as the crow flies but taking into account the near 30 foot of extensions that my mum put in 10 years ago it's not a bad speed.

    Re: O2 Broadband

Are the switchovers usually as fast as 5 days?
My dad has been with BT for years too, and the HomeHubs are terrible! I could save him money but he doesn't like changing things that often and my mum needs the connection for work. Just need to convince them to change and save money

    Re: O2 Broadband

Another BT to O2 convert here. I moved from paying Bt 29.99 for 2Mbs to O2 at £7.50 for 8Mbs

Not a heavy user so throtling was never an issue for me. However O2 DNS servers are not very good so beteer to use the unofficial O2 forums DNS servers or something like Open DNS ( which has its own issues as they re-direct Google searches to their own domains)

I am approximately 1.6 km from my local exchange, so I guess I would get similar speeds.

What's the address of these 'unofficial DNS servers'?

I found the DNS servers very bad with my own moder/router, but as soon as I caved in and used the horrible O2 box they were fine.

My connection is about 6.5-7 out of the 8mbps package, and ~950kbps upload. I'm 2.5km from the exchange. Previously I was with VM and got 5.5/0.4. Pings are worse than with VM, but that's almost certainly down to the O2 box.

    Re: O2 Broadband

I get about 6MB (on an 8MB deal) and am about 2 km from the exchange. I am happy with that (I have noise compensation cranked up too - as I don't like the line dropping out when I am playing online games.)

I get 16MB but I do pay for the 24MB Unlimited package. I actually get 14MB but when the line has settled I request a ticket to turn on fastpath which lowers my pings and increases my speed. I sync at 19000kbps though. Best to get Netgear router though as they resync and hold the sync's faster and longer than the BeBox.

I am 0.6 miles (956m) from the exchange by street, 600m as the crow flies and my lines attenuation based on averages tells me my actual line is 2km long.

Hi, how did you find that out? I'm thinking of switching from Be to O2 because it works out cheaper for me.
