Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Intermittent Connectivity - Please Help!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've recently moved into an apartment and have chosen BeThere as my ISP who I have now been with for about 5 weeks.
From day one I have experienced constant problems with connectivity. Connections would typically last maybe 5 mins at most and then drop off for a further 5-10mins or so. The intervals are completely random and can last seconds or 15mins+. Needless to say I can get bugger all done and it's so frustrating!
I've called Bethere on several occasions and they have given me the same advice everytime...
- check filters (which are installed on every socket),
- plug into master socket (done, and makes no difference)
- Bethere have reduced profile several times (which has had no effect)
- Finally bethere claimed it must be a problem with my phone line so I called BT (BT engineers have been out and can find no fault.)
I started off using the standard Bethere router but then switched it for a netgear router in the hope that this would do something, this didn't change a thing.
That was until just over a week ago when my connection worked like a dream I had no connectivity problems for around 6 days (I can't explain what happened but it just started working after I'd been away for a weekend - nothing had changed in the apartment or on my comp). Unfortuantely the problem came back when I got in from work 2 nights ago and hasn't held a connection for more than a few mins since... again nothing had been changed within the apartment or the comp.
There doesn't seem to be any problem establishing the wireless network, just connecting to the internet.
I'm a complete newb when it comes to all this and would be grateful if anyone can offer any useful advice?

Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Which package are you on? Can you post some line stats? Also if you sign into the member centre at the BeThere website you should be able to change the line profile to "optimise for reliability" - try that and let us know if it helps at all.
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
You could phone them up and ask them to increase the noise compensation on your line. I don't think they offer this unless you bring it up.
This will give you less bandwidth (but only by a bit) and may resolve the issue.
If you tell them that your priority is maintaining a connnection (rather than highest bandwidth) then they will do this.
I had a similar problem - and getting this noise compensation on my line has fixed it almost entirely.
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Thanks all, i'll give those a shot/and see what I can find out this evening. I'll post back tomorrow!
Thanks again.
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Do you get the same problem using a wired connection to teh router, rather than the wireless one?
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Yes, the connectivity issues still occur when hard wired. The dreaded red light doesn't seem affected by wireless or wired.
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Just as an update guys... tried the above interventions still no joy!
I've run the standard bebox connectivity test and all boxes come back ticked. When I look at the error logs there his a long history (seemingly every few mins) of not being able to connect to a server (sntp i think it was???)
Also I'm not sure how to get the line stats so that I can post them?
Cheers all
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Have a look at http://www.beusergroup.co.uk/technot...interpretation - that should tell you how to get your stats

After 5 weeks the line should have stabalised by now.
Your OS isn't putting the USB / LAN device to sleep to save power is it ?, check the option within Device Manager.
Also are you a long way from your exchange ?
Regards
Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Thanks for that, I'll check the settings in device manager, but I don't hold much hope for this though as the two other housemates also have the same issue when none of the others are connected. I guess it could be possible that we all have that setting. I'll look into it, cheers.
As the crow flies we're about 500m from the exchange but lord knows how many apartments/houses are inbetween our place and the exchange.

Strange :/
To be honest I also have had Intermittent Connectivity Problems recently with BeThere, I put this down to have a new line. I didn't seem to have any issues yesterday but I will keep an eye on it and let you know.
Maybe BeThere are upgrading their network, but on the other hand they are usually very good at keeping you updated with any new work, which may interfere with your connection.
If you are having the same issues on more than 1 PC then it must either be the Tel line or a fault with the ISP.

Re: Intermittent Connectivity Problem
Just a quick post while my net is actually up for a few mins... does this info help at all?

I called BeThere because I am having the same issues, they have suggested that I change the channel the router is using. If you log into your BeThere Router and configure WDS, then scan for wireless networks This will list all other networks in range and the channel they are using.
You need to change to a channel that none of the other wireless networks are using. For a Windows system you need to choose either Channel 1-6 or Channel 9.
If you are not using the BeThere modem like me then choose Channel 9, which should solve the problem.
I am going to try this tonight and will let you know how it goes.
Best Regards
