Right, i've got an external usb drive connected to my main pc, which is available over the network to my laptop, but if my pc is off it's in accesable, is there a way to make it permanently accesable over the network?
You have 2 main options, you can look into wol so it wakes up when you need it or you can get a cheap buffalo NAS which has the USB ports to plug in additional HD's, for the NAS option you would need a spare network socket.
Sound advice, IMHO go the NAS route mate its pretty painless to set up and should give you the basic ability to control access to the drive based on user accounts.

Isn't the nslu2 a NAS device?
Nice suggestion, thats a nice little device. Going one step further what about a wrt54g or compatible with dd-wrt firmware as in another thread.
