    Intarwebs needed for network upstairs

    Hi all,

Please allow me to present my masterpiece, drawn a matter of minutes ago.

My question is, can I get a router upstairs to accept the internet connection via the homeplug ethernet cable in order to distribute it to the computers upstairs, which also need to share files with each other?

    The downstairs router is a D-Link DSL-G624M.

I'm currently using a Netgear DG814 gateway upstairs.

I also have a DrayTek Vigor 2500We router (though it's in German which makes it a little hard to configure) and can probably arrange to get a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware.

    Thanks for any pointers.

You don't need a router upstairs, just a switch.

The main router will handle the connection between the internet and your own netowork, all you are doing is extending your network.

*edit* You should also ditch the DLink and use the Vigor or a WTR54G... or really anything, DLinks are crap. I would have though you could change the language of the DrayteK, you can on every other router I've ever used.

Flash the Vigor with a UK firmware and all should be good. Also you don't actually need a switch upstairs, just enough homeplug points.

    Thanks for the replies.

So with a switch, how would I configure it to accept the internet connection via the ethernet cable that comes out from the homeplug? I would much rather supply internet to the two PC's upstairs by plugging them into a central switch/router/whatever than having to buy a separate homeplug for each one.

Edit: could I configure the Netgear DG814 "gateway" to take the place of the switch? I'm not up on the differences between routers, switches and gateways.

The PC's also need to share files with each other - would a switch allow for this?

Re: Intarwebs needed for network upstairs

You don't configure a switch, you just plug it in.

If you think of the homeplug as just a long ethernet cable, with the switch at the other end you are just extending the number of PC's you can connect to the network. No idea if you can get the DG814 to work as a basic switch, depends if you can turn off all the router (and it is a router, not a gateway) functions including NAT, DHCP, etc.

Yes, a switch in there will let all 3 PCs share data and have internet access.

I have no idea what a "gateway" is, a quick search on Wikipedia shows that they don't seem to exist, just hubs, switches, routers and bridges.

Re: Intarwebs needed for network upstairs

    Thanks for the helpful clarification.

I also found Using a router as a switch/hub, and now have internet access and sharing working between the PC's. The DG814 has auto uplink ports so it was very simple.

    Thanks again.
