    Wireless network woes

I have a small wireless network at home, consisting of a cheepy Tiscali router, one wired computer, PS2, my computer and laptop (wireless), and my brothers computer(also wireless).
Everything on it is fine, except my brothers computer will not connect to the network. I have tried asigning it an ip address manually, (192.168.1.9 for thouse of you interested, as router is 1, my pc is 2, ps2 is 3, main pc is 4 lappy is 5, so 9 should not be used.)

I have cheacked that the WAP key is correct, and tried using both Windows wireless networking (zero config), and Belkins one. The computer is an AMD sepron 1.1 AFINK, with a belkin PCI wireless G card installed. THis one. It has been tried with two different sets of drivers (i think that one of them was the l8test), and is closer than my computers in my room (it also states excelent signel with this connection)

It says that it is configuring the network, and accuiring IP, then disconnects. THe only thing that I can think of is this (the routers error log) seems to be recording a lot of attacks when I am trying to connect:

    O.o

The only things that I can think of are the ariel (points directly down, as the moniter plug gets in the way pointing up. There is also the fact the PC keeps freezing, but it has always done this, and it could connect at one time b4.
    Please help thanks hexus members

    Re: Wireless network woes

Have you checked the wireless channel that the card is using and the channel the router is using?
(Can be checked by going into device manager and going onto the cards properties)
Same issue my brothers computer had, and it was the wireless channel that was configured incorrectly.
    Just a thought

    Re: Wireless network woes

You could try temporarily disbling the encryption and see if it will connect. I've had compatibility problems with various cards and WPA, e.g. my laptop is a bit fussy about connecting to some encrypted wireless networks but connects to my own with WPA just fine.

Leaving the encryption off long term is not a sensibke option but it could be useful temporarily to turn it off to diagnose the problem further.

    Re: Wireless network woes

On the encryption note, it could be a difference in standards ie one using WPA and the other WPA2?

Had this trouble myself with my mates PC. Only thing that solved the problem was a format. Bit drastic but it worked!

    Re: Wireless network woes

yeah, thats what I changed on my brothers computer and it worked

One thing I would say though, belkin wireless G equipment isnt the most reliable. I dont know about their wireless N equipment, havent tried it yet.
What model is the USB receiver?

    Re: Wireless network woes

The PC with the wireless card should auto-detect the channel and encryption type when it detects / connects to the network.

I always try to use the standard windows wireless connection applet rather than the one that comes with the card, I've had no end of problems trying to get a wireless card to connect with the wireless utilities that come with them.

    Re: Wireless network woes

Have you assigned his computer a static IP address? As it could well be that the router is assigning one of the other appliances in your house that IP, resulting in an IP conflict.

And if the router is blocking his computer, then maybe you could put an exception on the router for his MAC address? just a thought

    What Strike-down said...

It sounds to me like there are two machines that have been set the same lan IP by MAC address.

Go into your router and find the device list, look for two devices that have the same number at the end e.g. 192.168.0.67, if your tiscali router is similar to the one I have from O2 you should be able to delete one of the devices from the list. Once you reconnect the device the router should allocate it a new IP address.

another potential problem could be the number of access points available on the router? I seem to remember my ex-girlfriend's BT home hub was somewhat limited, only 2 or 3 wifi connections at once or something like that.

Aye, I got lazy when first fiddling with port forwarding and static IPs on my old router. Its wise to make sure the IP you asign is outside of the routers DHCP range, what I did was just drop it by one and use that. So if DHCP is 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.50.. Change it to 192.168.1.49 and score an IP you know wont be handed to anything else that connects.

Echo turning off the WPA and seeing if it makes a difference too.. Not all cards are WPA2 compatible (I think?).. Couldnt use WPA2 on my brothers wireless cause one of the laptops in the house didnt wanna know it, google told me about the compatiblity ^^ and WPA worked perfectly. Might be worth a shot?
