BT legallity
I am subscribed to BT broadband on a one year basic package (the lowest you can get).
I am at the furthest reach of the system so my speeds would be so poor that to subscribe to anything except basic would waste money (plus when it rains it sometimes does not connect at all, oh what fun).
I am now about 2 months in to my renewal (I had no problems with them so thought I would keep them on) and they have sent me an email. They have changed the Terms and Conditions such that if I request a MAC outside my subscription period and do not use it, they will charge me @2 months subscription !!. What if I just don't want Broadband? Can they impose a charge like this?
Obviously I will be setting up the cancellation for the last day of the renewal and will probably move across to Be, but has anyone else noted this from BT and had any thoughts on it? Seems another way to make money for doing nothing :(

Re: BT legallity
If Broadband providers change their Terms and Conditions you have the right to cancel the contract with no penalty within a certain timeframe. (AOL and Pipex are good examples of this).
Often though, this timeframe is not well publicised and can easily be missed. If it is, then you are stuck in your contract and the new T&C's apply.
Call them and ask.v

Re: BT legallity
I would question whether this email really came from BT, as it does sound surprising in the terms. Check out BT.com for the latest Ts&Cs.

Re: BT legallity
You can just request it to be cancelled from your line. You don't need a MAC for that.

Re: BT legallity
If it doesn't connect when it rains, it implies that there is water getting into a junction somewhere and degrading the line. Get that fixed and you may well find that the overall line performance improves.

Re: BT legallity
Thanks guys.
Had a look. The dates are in the small print. Will give them a call.
If I just stopped using them I suppose when I wanted a BB provider I would not lose cash getting a MAC because I would be using it. But I still think it is just a con by BT.
