Ordered a new router and AP

My brother is having internet issues (and if i can't sort it, expect a thread in a day or two) so i'm giving him me current Belkin router, at least I know it works, not sure if his current Edimax is or not.

So I ordered a nice DrayTek Vigor 2700 from Broadbandbuyer.co.uk last night. Pairing this with a Edimax BR-6574N 802.11n router from Scan that I'll trun into an access point. It also means I'll have a few more gigabit ports available as the Edimax has a gigabit swith in there as well.

Quite looking forward to getting these set up tomorrow night. Just checked and both are due to be delivered by CityLink tomorrow

er why do you need two routers? I thinking the Draytek and the edimax are both routers .

The Draytek to be the gateway (with no wifi), the Edimax to be a WAP.

    What Splash said

Wireless routers are often cheaper than dedicated APs for some reason. I could have gone for the Draytek wifi router, but there has been some big problems with Draytek wireless in the past, especially with things like Squeezeboxes. It also means i can just turn wireless off if I don't need it.

Both deliveries are in, so I'll be playing with them this evening.

Re: Ordered a new router and AP

    Okay makes sense

I used to have a Draytek 2600We and it worked fine in terms of Wi-fi
I understand that there have been issues with wifi for the 2800 series of Drayteks.

Sadly my old 2600We died ( I think lightening) - works as an ethernet hub but the ADSL modem part has died. I now use an old Netgear DG834GT but I really miss my old Draytek. never had to re-boot it for a five year period.

Re: Ordered a new router and AP

I recently upgraded to a 2820N from a vanilla 2800 with a seperate WAP and I've so far been very impressed with it. Being able to have 2 seperate wireless SSIDs that can be VLANed off from each other means I can setup one which is RADIUS authenticated and talks nicely to my LAN and one that offers rate-limited internet access for other people in my block of flats/friends who visit. VERY stable with it, and it works fine with BeThere.

yes I've had my eyes on a 2820N but its an eye watering £175 (even with the free USB client adaptorthey were including for some time)

Yeah, the price smarted, but I managed to reclaim some of it by selling my old 2800. It really is a VERY nice router, and will be even nicer when they implement an SSL VPN functionality (as I believe is the plan)
