Internet Bandwidth Usage

Have you ever wondered when your online, how much bandwidth do you use up in an average month?

I have recently after abusing live TV streams and of course the BBC iplayer as well as a few other places so I thought that I would measure what my average bandwidth usage was.

First of all, the monitoring application.

I stumbled across this when checking a new post over at Thinkbroadband and downloaded and installed their application tbbmeter

This monitors your connection and logs acurately how much data is coming and going and here is my log for november ;



So, I set the challenge. Install the application now and on the 31st December, post up your screenshots of your usage, and lets see if a pattern emerges.

can i just ask, how come your upload is like.. 50% higher than your download, surely your download should be loads higher?

I've been running a few game servers recently and left it running for nearly 2 weeks solid when I was in hospital. Not only that but the PC also does VC1 high-def streaming to the 360 in the living room as well as running slimserver for the squeezeboxes


It didn't crash thought, I'm impressed with that fact lol

Il get this downloaded when I'm back home, looks pretty good.

Also does it monitor actual I.P address, or purely based on which ever computer its running on, so what that specific computer has downloaded/uploaded?

so this is just for the PC it's running on yeah?

So the radio streamed directly to me squeezeBoxes isn't going to be included?

It'll monitor only the computer that it is installed, and it'll monitor all traffic (assumption based on a similar program I'm using)

Interesting, but not very useful, i'll have to see if my Vigor had traffic logs

Thats a bit annoying, I have my laptop, my main pc, and my server that see quite alot of traffic between them.

Oh well I'll stick it on my laptop and see what happens.

Why not just use the free version of netlimiter which can identify if the packet is local or not, though its quite cpu hungry.

i second that on netlimiter, used it before

haven't noticed anything about being cpu hungry though

i uninstalled it because it was interferring with steam at one point and i couldn't play games etc

does this tbbmeter send my data information annonymously or not to a server/isp

I think if you register with thinkbroadband.com it can send data to your account allowing you to have multiple client data aggregation and to be able to view historical data as well.

But i don't think it sends data, anonymouse or otherwise to their server normally.
