    Question Operating system using bandwidth?

I have 20mb broadband from Virgin Media. I have tested this connection on both Vista and Linux (from the same computer, about 5 minutes apart) using the website speedtest. net.... On Vista i got 11mbs and on Linux i got 18mbs.

I decided to give virgin a ring and they told me to restart my computer and boot up in vista safe mode with networking. They then told me to go to a website and download a large file. I downloaded 3 files simeltaniously and the virgin man said they should total a speed of between 1.5mbs and 2mbs which they did do. I then canceled all 3 of them and started another download from the same site and it went at 1.5mbs.

I then went back on the speed testing website, while on safe mode with networking, and that came out to be 18mbs.

My whole point of this post is that it seems like Vista is using internet bandwidth in the background even when i am not running anything! The virgin man suggested this to me but i didnt think it could be but the more i think the more i believe it!

Can someone shed some light on the sitch please?

    thanks,

Turn off IPv6 support and retry. Linux manages network connections much beter than Windows, the Windows stack has never been much good and they haven't done much to it over the years.

It's got something to do with Vista's Auto TCP/IP tuning thingy. Also I had a same sort of problem but that was due to Generic drivers for my ethernet card installed.

    Take a look at this

    and possibly try this

It can help, Vista gets a bit confused about IPv6 when its enabled but not in use. The funny thing is that its enabled by default
