    Network cable length?

Does network cable length affect performance? Download/Upload speeds and Ping time? Packet loss? Anything at all?

    0.5m ethernet cord.... compared to 5m.... 10m???

    Thanks

Nah, I don't need that much at all.

I'm having to run Home Plugs in my wall sockets because I don't have a phone line in the room my new Desktop is going in...

So I wanted to minimize internet lag and connection issues as much as possible with the shortest cords...

I'm still skeptical about home plug, I hope it doesn't affect my connection at all compared to directly plugging into my Home Hub.

Anyone have experience with home plugs? Thanks

    Re: Network cable length?

I use homeplug and you must plug it direct into a wall outlet on both ends to get the best out of them.

    Re: Network cable length?

I'm getting .1ms (100 microseconds over about 25 metres cat5 (through two switches) on a local lan - so NO - the cable length is insignificant (particularly when compared with the distances packets travel over the public internet).

    Re: Network cable length?

Think about you cat5 enabled office - most of that is meters and metres of cable run from a switch to your floor / wall port.

    No,
CAT5 works with no packet loss to 140 m
    BNC (coaxial) - to 400 m

Wireless: yes, don't go over manufacturer's specifications, but divide it by 10. Let's say on the box it says that it will work 100 metres indoors, you divide by 10 and results is 10 metres.

It may work but it's beyond spec.
The spec for ethernet allows for a maximum of 100 meters.

What standards do you work to/use? I'm sure the CAT5 standards specify distances up to 100m. My understanding that fixed cable runs of up to 90-95 metres would be recommended to allow the for distance added by the use of patch cables (0.5m to 5m) - so the run from port to port is up to 100m. I assume that runs greater than 100m might work but would be out of standard.

edit: What badass said - I am a slow typer

100m is the spec limit and should not be used above 100m
