Internet not working on Vista laptop...

Internet not working on Vista laptop...

    Anyone able to help?

I have a Vista laptop (new) on a network with manual IP address / DNS settings pointed to a local AD DNS server (Win 2000 server), pinging google will work perfectly, DNS resolves the IP address, and local network is working perfectly. The IP settings are correct and DNS settings correct as they work perfectly on XP machines. But when you use internet explorer it wont get to any website at all - I've checked LAN connection settings in IE, it's set to auto detect proxy, changing this makes no difference. The laptop is cabled physically into the network (so it's not a wireless issue), and it's running Vista SP1. I can't put XP on the machine as the manufacturer don't do XP drivers.

    Thanks guys!

Does tracert show the route going through your proxy etc or is there some funky routing in place? Does the laptop show local and internet connectivity, or just local?

Is it possible to try another browser to see if the issue is restricted to IE?

When I connect to a wireless network at home with Vista it sometimes asks me what type of connection I'm using (Home, Public, Private etc) - could this have anything to do with it? How do you access this in Vista? Is this still applicable for a laptop on the domain?

Yep, you should still be prompted for this info when joining a wireless network on Vista regardless of if the machine is a member of a domain or not (I've not looked into whether this can be controlled by GPO, but given that if you're working at an untrusted location you *really* want to be selecting "public").

Regardless, it's a cabled connection as the OP says but it's a good thought.
