    Network Overhaul

Its only a small network but due to me now wanting to share video/large files between my pc and xbox and other stuff i want to change how it's done.

Currently i have my wireless modem router downstair by the phone socket as that the only one in the house (don't want to install a new phone socket) and its the only place where the wireless network reaches the whole house for my ipod (if its by my pc my living room doesn't get it and the ps3 can't access the internet)
I want to change it so my pc and xbox are linked together via wired but i still have my router where it is downstair. Currently they are connected wireless to the router

These are the option i've come up with...

    1. Have a powerline network plugged in downstair and one by my pc which the goes to a switch
    Wireless router -----Home plug---powercables around house---home plug----switch----pc & xbox

    2. A wireless gaming/ethernet adaptor which is then plugged into a switch again.
    Wireless router-----Airwaves 802.11g-----Wireless gaming/ethernet adaptor----Switch--PC

    3. (not sure if this is possible) A wireless router which connect to my current wireless modem router and then doubles up as a switch
    Wireless Modem Router-------Airwaves 802.11g-----Wireless Router-----PC

Which of these is going to give the best performance bearing in mind i want the lowest ping times for gaming. I would have thought that the homeplugs would but i'm not sure if they are good or not. Also is there anything i need to watch out for like DHCP. Currently my modem router does it all but will i need to be careful with thse once i start introducing switches.

Also i don't want to run a ethernet cable from upstair to my pc

I use a WGPS606 from Netgear to bridge from the Wireless Modem/Router to where my PCs/360 etc are, and could add on a gigabit switch for added performance.

Anyone else. I like the idea of homeplug but i don't know if there performance will be any better.
Whats going to give me the best ping

As I've posted in other threads for this - your options performance-wise go

    cabled>homeplug>wireless.

If you want the absolute best performance cabled is your only option, as you have ruled this out already your next best option is Homeplug. Option 1 it is.

    Re: Network Overhaul

    Homeplug it is then.

Thinking of getting this one and i've just wondered if i should get a hub or a switch. I know switches give better performance but do they work well if i've got things attached to a router. Or am i being a real noob and its obvious.
Plus what about ip address and dhcp. What will i need to about thse as currently my modem/router handles these with DHCP on. Due tot he switch at the other end of the homeplug do i need to watch out for something

Edit: Just found out that you can only buy switches from scan so i'll probaly get an 8 port one for future growth. Plus there's only £5 difference

    Re: Network Overhaul

You will be hard pushed to find a hub these days - so the question doesn't really arise. However if you are using homeplug, there is no point in getting a gigabit switch - the homeplug link will be the limiting factor (unless you are connecting two computers locally using cable)

    Re: Network Overhaul

You shouldn't have any issues with DHCP assuming you will only have the one router on the network. Switches don't give out DHCP addresses.

Thanks so i don't need to worry about DHCP.

Been thinking about it more though and have actually decided that i'd like to have a cable installed.
Does anyone wonder how much it would cost (Labour) roughly for someone to install it so all the cables are hidden behind walls and it has a faceplate on either end.
I would do it myself but i feel it's not simple enough to do it as i want everything hidden and my previous DIY projects haven't ended well.

Can't help you there as I fitted my own - give your local sparky a call and see what they have to say. It shouldn't take long unless your walls are a nightmare

How hard was it to fight your own? do you think i should give it a go?
Any tips you have would be helpful.

If not i will phone my local sparky.
And i may get a gigabyte switch then as i can use the full speeds. (Plus it's probaly cheaper to get an electrician in then pay £75 for the homeplugs as it's a fairly simple task i would have thought)

    Re: Network Overhaul

How much it costs to get cables behind walls depends entirely what's involved and where the cable run is going. If you're only talking plasterboard walls then it's relatively easy (although repairing a botch job on plasterboard can be a real PITA), if you're talking bricks and mortar with plaster on top then it's time to break out the bolster and hammer and get a plasterer on standby.

And it's not really a job for a sparky, any DIY 'handyman' can do a non-mains cable run for you. Byt really, it's as hard or as easy as you make it. Running along floor joists and putting your faceplate at skirting board level isn't too hard and only involves a small amount of wall-bashing/plastering.
