    Processing power and ram for sever

    Which is better a faster single quad core xeon or 2 lower spec xeons?

    The sever will be compressing image files from NAS storage sever so they are viewable over web browser. The web sever will have300 odd users would 8Gb be enough.

    1 x Xeon X5450 or 2x Xeon E5410 could I get away with 1 xeon E5410 is this overkill?

    Users are not expected to increase over the next few years.

    if the compression program is multithreaded than I would say 2x Xeon E5410 would be the best bet.

    It is very hard to give you any more advice as there isn't enough information to say if you have too much or too little RAM.

    To get an accurate picture of what hardware you need you would have to set up a test system and measure the typical workload (in reallity this will be a "test" workload) so you have some hard numbers to play with. The sorts of things you need to know are:

    How many requests will you be processing at a time (single users can sometimes generate multiple requests at the same time, multiple users means even more requests in parallel)?
    How long does it take to compress each image?
    How much delay is acceptable to the users?

    Once you have some hard numbers, you'll be able to work out how much hardware you actually need. Next you have to work out the best value way of getting that performance, e.g. a pair of Xeon 5410 CPUs give more total (multi-thread) performance than a single Xeon 5450 and cost less too but their single thread performance will be less.

    You may find that the hardware you've mentioned is either far more powerful than you need or not powerful enough by some big margin. If the hardware can't handle the work load, thats the point at which you optimise and not before!
