Why is AOL so difficult to get working?

Today tried to connect a friends new PC to AOL (yes I know but, It's their choice). Why is it soo difficult?

Never managed to get it connected, even though the modem was reporting being connected at 6.5Mb. Finally they claimed it was a fault on the phone line ??

Re: Why is AOL so difficult to get working?

Well tell your friend that you can't help him now or in the future if they insist on sticking with AOL (****holes Online?)

One of my wife's best friends asked my advice on getting online so I made several recommendations to fit her budget and her requirements. She chose to ignore them and bought her internet from a dodgy reseller. Next time she had a problem I told her to go and see this person because I couldn't help her with a system I knew nothing about.

Quite a good result really. She was one of those people who was always having stupid little problems, mostly caused by her kids messing about with things they didn't understand, and as she was a close friend of the wifes I didn't feel I could charge her for my time. (Although her husband obviously didn't feel the same way when he did some work in our garden and charged me for it.)
She hasn't asked me for help since. Result!

AOL have the poorest network in the UK. I have never had anyone say anything good about their internet service and their software is terrible. The number of times I have had to reformat people system becuase of AOL 9!!

Re: Why is AOL so difficult to get working?

I think it's the same as anything, It is used by people that really don't know any better.

My friend has it because her sister had AOL and she thought it was good.

I can't understand why the heck AOL think a broadband connection needs to use a username and password ?? Why can't they just be like the others where you plug it in and it works? Without the need for software or anything else.

With both Virgin and Be all I did was plugged a lan cable between the modem/router and the computer - it just worked.
There was no need to set up a special network connection with username and password.

yes, the Be box has the username and password built in.

The issue with AOL is that the software logs you in and its not really and always on conection. I just got a Netgear router and used that.

Your Virgin account is tied to the MAC address of the modem. As Jay says, the Be box has your username and password already embedded.

In almost all other cases, you will have to set up the router first, or install the USB modem software and enter the user/pass

Negative, otherwise when I setup my Vigor 2820 I would have needed to enter credentials, which I didn't.

Bethere uses MPoA (IIRC) and not PPPoA which pre-configures the router you plug into there service.
So while your Vigor didn't have the settings on it when it ships, they become embedded once you hook it up.

Probably not the best wording on my part - but the result is the same, as long as Bethere is your ISP.
