    Online gaming problem with wirless.

Hi, I've been have problem with playing COD5 on wirless networking.

The problem is while playing about every 3 minutes "connection interrupted" will appear and I will lag for about 3 secs, very annoying. I've tried forwarding the correct ports to no avail. I've also tried fidling with some other settings also no joy, networking is not really my area so they were stabbs in the dark.

Today I lugged my PC downstairs and tried it with a wired connection. It worked perfectly. That's not really an option though as there is nowhere for my pc downstairs and I like having it in my room.
My wireless card is a Pluscom 54mps pci card. And im using sky's sagem router.

    Many thanks.

have a look at the issues of wireless Zero via google.

Wireless zero causes lag every couple of minutes.

Home plugs seem like a bit of an expensive solution but thanks anyway barrichello.
Jay would you know any way disabling zero in vista? I'm searching the web but finding nothing useful/relavent so far.

Re: Online gaming problem with wirless.

right, so i found out that if i disable wlan svc it just disconnects me from the internet. So i found some tools called vista anti lag and wlan optimizer.

Vista anti lag sorta works, it just makes the disconnections less frequent. Wlan optimizer I dont really know what this is doing but it's not solving the problem.

It seems my internet in general is playing up a little right now so i cant count these utilities right out, but other people have stated that these dont always solve the problem. The problem is with vista, i might just install cod on XP but that would be a pain as XP takes ages to boot as its on an old IDE drive.

For anything latency critical, the order of reliability will be

    Cable
    Homeplug

Wireless (trailing a poor third) If you can't run cat5, then homeplug will be the next best thing.

would it by any chance be an overused channel? maybe there's a lot of people who use wireless in your area.. try a different frequency

Re: Online gaming problem with wirless.

Thanks for the response guys. I've tried Xp and that has some even more odd problems, when i kill someone i would lag out etc.

So I believe the only option for me is homeplugs, I doubt cat5 is really option.

Are homeplugs a lot better than wireless? which ones are the best? I dont want to fork out a lot of cash but then again I dont want something awful which is going to give me the same problems as wireless has.

I'd be more inclined to look at this

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Netge...-(Wall-plugged)

but ONLY on the strength of the Netgear name. I haven't used any Homeplug products myself. (Cat 5 for me!)

    I just ordered these http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=22554

They were on today only but I made a real stupid mistake of clicking the name, then buy, paying the full price! dammit lol. £5 down the drain.

A fair few staff members use the zyxel homeplug hardware for streaming media and connecting their consoles to the world-wide wibble so I can pwn them at COD4 or FIFA

Does anyone know of any good network benchmarking software? It would be helpful for a comparison.

SiS sandra seems to crash my whole pc whenever I try to run any test for some reason.

Re: Online gaming problem with wirless.

Well I've had the ZyXEL homeplugs installed for a day.

First problem, although this is my fault is that the software provided isn't compatibile with vistax64. My bad for not checking but this is pretty poor in my opinion. They were very easy to set-up and people with minimal IT knowledge could set them up. It was simply a case of plugging one in my room, one in the nearest socket too the router and then connecting them up with ethernet cables, they provided some in the box which was nice.

Anyway they give pretty much the same preformance as wireless in regard to ping to my favorite COD:WaW servers and d/l speeds are pretty much identical. There is some anoying lag while I was playing poker, but this would happen sometimes with wireless too. The reason I bought them was to have a guaranteed connection while playing online. That has been solved by these homeplugs.

People were also saying that they took up too much space on a plug socket. They are a bit bulky I dont see this to really be the case. Mine are plugged into normal dual wall sockets and have a phone charger in the adjacent socket. If you had another large plug - same size as the ZyXEL then problems could arrise, but for most other plug sockets there should be no problem.

Finally - if anyone stumbles accross this thread in the future - after I ordered the homeplugs, I actually got my wireless to work! What I did was that I downloaded WLAN optimiser, (dont have link, a google search should produce it) turned it on had it active in the taskbar, further I changed my wireless channel from 1 to 11 and hey presto, no more constant lag caused by wirless zero, one of the worst features ever. ha. Thanks for everyones help.

Re: Online gaming problem with wirless.

TBH your title says it all,

wireless networking + gaming = BIG NO NO

wireless networks are great if you want to browse the internet anywhere in your house since you dont really need much resources for that

But when your running a game a single lost packet is a big difference, and wireless networks are great at loosing them, if one packet is lost your game has to wait for the next one, hence your conection interupts

i got a wireless router in my house and its right accross a very thin wall, and i tend to find my ping goes up to 400 with wireless where as it was normally 40 with wired, and the game starts to glitch alot, even if im playing bf2 with my brother on just house network
