    No Web Access through IE7

Hello - Up until now, I have been able to access the web using Internet Explorer 7 on my Shuttle X box. No longer. I get: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Most likely causes:... etc....".

When I choose to diagnose connection problems I get: "Windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection.". "HTTP: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com".
"FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com". "HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com".

Separately, I have no issues pinging other machines on the home network, and I have no problems pinging the Shuttle box from other machines either.

Would anyone have a sense as to what may be happening and how to fix it?

    Thank you,

    JP7

    firefox...

is the firewall, or the settings blocking it?

I checked the settings. There is nothing I could see that would block it.
(and yes, I use firefox on my main machine...)

This is a good idea but it may be worth him finding out what the problem is first.

It's unlikely to be proxy settings as otherwise I'd imagine that the HTTP and FTP connections to www.microsoft.com would fail.

Is it possible to run another browser to test if it's purely IE7?

    Have you run antivirus/antimalware scans?

    System Restore?

    File-> Work offline?

Shouldn't be if the test is passing, but worth checking.

After all the above, do an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan! Seems a bit strange it should just stop working.

Re: No Web Access through IE7

I ran virusscan on the Shuttle box. I then hooked it up to the router using an ethernet cable. The machine showed as properly hooked up to the network (I could ping other machines on the network and vice versa; I also could see the machine in the router manager page that I accessed through one of my other machines).

I still didn't get web access. Nor could I get into the router. I checked firewall settings (both Microsoft and McAfee) and de-activated them. That didn't help.

I loaded the Firefox executable on one of my working machines and copied it onto a portable hard drive. Loaded it on the Shuttle box. Same problem.

Any views, advice from the experts really appreciated...

What happens if you just put the IP of the website in your browser?

Yeah, starting to look slightly DNS-y (though the earlier test suggests otherwise). What do you get if you do

    ping www.google.co.uk

    from a command prompt?

Re: No Web Access through IE7

Jay, Splash - I turned the Shuttle box on this morning to do what you both suggested.
When I started Firefox...it displayed my homepage (google). I surfed around and had no problem accessing various sites.

I have no clue as to how that happened, nor can I point to any step I have taken to try to correct the problem this past weekend that would have cleared the problem.

Anyway, thank you all for your help.

Excellent another problem solved with the IT help desk's favoured fault resolution method: turn it off and back on again.

I had something similar due to as issue with a NTL/virgin DNS: everything tells you your pc and internet connection are working but you cannot view some or all websites. Had to set a DNS rather than use the default.
