    Wireless Newbie

    Hey guys,
Been a while since ive posted on here.

Basically my problem is we currently have orange broadband with a usb modem and it works fine but my mum and I have both decided we need wireless for our laptops. Now i'm normally the one my family comes to but i haven't got a clue about networks and wireless so if anybody could help me out i'd be grateful.

I figure I need an adsl router with wireless (looking at wireless N) but apart from that i don't know much. We have a mix of xp and vista and i'll probably wire my main computer with a cat5 because thats what i game on.

ive been looking at this: D-LINK. Would this be any good?

    Re: Wireless Newbie

What standard do the laptops use? If they only support G (like the vast majority of laptops) then I cant see the need to get a wireless N router. Especially if its only going to be used for internet browsing.

A Pre or Draft N router will give you a range increase even when using devices that are just 802.11g. You will also likely get a slightly stronger and more stable signal with that setup, especially if you have many other networks in the area.

Well mine uses G but my mums can Use N. It's not a major thing, just thought it would be a bit more future-proof (as far as these things go)

    Re: Wireless Newbie

If your mums laptop is already N then that kit would be good, then you can put the USB reciever on your laptop making it N as well.
