    Help with Virgin wireless please

My son has Virgin cable broadband and wanted to go wireless so I bought him a standard wireless router. How the hell do you connect this thing? The cable seems to come in via a co-ax which connects to the existing router via a screwed connection. Is there some kind of gizmo or converter that you can get that turns this co-ax thing into an ethernet connection? If push comes to shove can he simply whack the existing ethernet pc cat 5 lead from the wired router into the wireless one, or will he end up with some sort of device conflict?

I'm trying to give him help via mobile phone photographs at the moment - talk about the blind leading the partially sighted!!

If you have a standalone Virgin broadband unit (as opposed to connecting via a TV box) then the box Virgin supply will be a cable modem. That will take the coax cable from Virgin in, and have (I hope) an ethernet port out (assuming it's not USB only, if they still do those). That is what I have.

On the back of you router, you should find a WAN port. You then need an ethernet cable to go from the ethernet out of the cable modem to the WAN port on the router. Again, that's what I do.

Once physically connected, you'll then need to set a couple of parameters on the router to tell it how to talk to Virgin.

The good thing with cable is that once it leaves the modem, it just becomes a standard part of the network. Plonk it into the WAN port and no other configuration is needed as such.

The only config comes from things like wireless networks and NAT (if you need to change this).

To the OP: Super simple way of doing this is to buy a WRT54 (Get the linux capable version). Plug the power in, plug the ethernet in and hook up any machines you want to it. The WRT54 is cheap, super stable, very powerful and is pretty much the standard router people use

Quality advice from Agent and Saracen above.

Couple of things to note, Virgin are trying to retire the USB connected modems or migrate customers to the ethernet port if supported by the modem. If you do have a usb modem phone virgin and it will be replaced free of charge. The other thing to ensure is that the router you purchased iis cable compatible and not an adsl version (common mistake)

You will always have to connect to the supplied modem by ethernet, there are no routers currently available that cinnect directly to the coax in this country.

Even if you could, it's against Virgins T&C to use any other modem (not for you Jamin, but others )
