u need a crimping tool, may as well buy a new cable as it will cost less and work out the box![]()
Cat 5 Cable Fabrication
How to Make a Cat 5 Patch Cable
Google really, you'll need to trim the wires which may be tricky without the right tool - if it's the Maplins clear plugs they have two parts, one is like a block with small holes that you thread them through in the right order, it holds them in place as you slot it into the "plug" end.
To be honest, by the time you've bought the plugs and a tool you may as well have bought just a new cable - unless you like having the tools around to cable up in the future.
unsheath the outer plastic. put the wires in this order (you do not strip them; you just ram them in and crimp)
1.) Orange Stripe
2.) Orange
3.) Blue Stripe
4.) Green
5.) Green Stripe
6.) Blue
7.) Brown Stripe
8.) Brown

I made up 16 of them this week and ran 16 cables, patched them, put the keystone and backbox on the wall and I think I have aged about 20 years. Its a horrible job, just buy a new one!

that's true, it is horrible. it takes about 10 minutes to do one head. maybe 3 mins if you're really really good and you know all the little tricks.
i had to wire my parents' entire house when they remodeled. An average of 3-4 Ethernet jacks in each room. And all of them terminated in the basement on a big switchboard I made
I don't know how the factories make them, but there's got to be a better way.
teminating on ethernet outlets is a lot easier as you just use a punchdown tool, but actually making patch cables is something I'd only do in emergencies.
yes, I had to make the patch leads as well.![]()

I found this so useful I put it on my webspace just for occasions such as this.
Theres no substitute for having a box of cable, some ends, a crimp tool and a tester (and if you feel really flash some strain boots), take lots of cables to a LAN party, not me I just take a box and make them up there![]()
