    Odd tech calls

have you come across any really strange things people have done to their computers?

Today I was called to my manager’s desk, he said I had to see what the MD had done to his monitor

When I went into the room I couldn’t believe what I saw! The MD and my manager had been drawing a small floor plan in publisher and the MD had got his pencil out and drawn all over the screen!

    Give him an eraser

I have seen people do that before (with a marker pen instead) but with a transparency sheet between them and the screen

I have seen the old "CDROM tray used as a coffee holder" as well, they don't make drive trays like they used to!!

I tried to do that on purpose once. fortunitely i have decent reflexes, otherwise i would have killed a keyboard when the drive decided to close the tray after a certain amount of time. It was about the only thing the drives were good for at uni. The systems were locked down pretty hard, so you couldn't use them anyway.

I remember dealing with someone who was very annoyed to find they could not cut their ISA card down to size with a hacksaw, to use in a PCI slot.

    Re: Odd tech calls

    I've had a variety of crackers;

Had a site call up asking if we were going to "switch the electric back on soon". Was a powercut, but because they'd checked the server and it was running (good old UPS) they assumed we were "doing stuff".

Had to talk an elderly dear through an order system. Took me 10 mins to get her to click the ok box. Why? Well, after the obvious left button/right button one, we still weren't getting anywhere. Only by chance I hear a faint dink when telling her "put the mouse over the ok box and click the left button". Yup, she was literally putting the mouse ON the monitor, and clicking ok.

Had a "CD player isn't working" on machine that didn't have a CD drive - They'd been pushing CD's through the gap between the blanking plates.

    Users...... god bless em.

    Re: Odd tech calls

I once had an issue with HP desktop systems. It became obvious that there was a bios issue. I called in their tech guys who arrived with a bag of bios chips and left them on reception.

    Strange.

Reminds me of times supporting of a Major bank (one of the ones we haven't had to bail out!).

If you wanted a new laptop, you had complete a 3 page justification document, have it authorised by line manager, approved by your cost centre, then sent to the purchasing team.

If your laptop was damaged beyond economical repair, it was replaced next day with a shiney new one.

Can you guess what happened next?
