    Re: email hosting options

I use Google Apps standard Edition to host email for my domain, it's free for up to 50 email addresses, you get a nice cut down version of their premier edition control panel, it's fine for personal / family use. See here for a comparison with their paid for service & here to sign up.

I'm also using Google Apps hosting for my domain (though strangely I get 100 addresses) - well worth looking into.

Another vote for Google Apps, I've found it very good in the couple of months I've been using it!

    Re: email hosting options

Where do you get that pricre from? I pay a grand total of $0 forever for it (I think you're looking at the business version, not the standard version). As for ad supported I guess that rules out pretty much any freebie hosting, in which case how many mailboxes are you talking about? If it's only one or 2 then one of the hosted Exchange services might suit (there were a few threads elsewhere on the forums where people recommended some, I don't use them so I can't comment)

EDIT - just a thought - have you considered self-hosting? I did this for a few years before moving to Google Apps, and it's really not hard. Plus it may give you skills that come in handy further down the line (I got some experience from migrating between different mailservers which has come in VERY handy at work since)

    Re: email hosting options

i would self host but i dont want to have to have a server on 24/7

and with the old man living at his house and me in mine its not an option to have mine turned on when he wants to check his email

i would rather pay for hosting than have google ads splashed down the side

    Re: email hosting options

Fair enough, I have no problem with Google Ads on my Google Search or my Google Mail but I can understand why people would prefer not use use it.

What's your budget, and how many mailboxes? What features do you need? POP3? IMAP? Calendaring?

If you do go the hosted Exchange route, SimplyMailSolutions.com are good. been with them a few months now.

Having your full inbox, contacts and calendars everywhere you go (including windows mobile phone) is fantastic.

    What he said!
    Hosted Exchange rocks.

We use Rackspace for some of our clients - very very impressed with them.

$50 is only for the premium version, standard version is free.

You only see the adds if you access the email via the web interface, if you enable POP3 or IMAP and access via Outlook (fully supported connection method) then you never see an advert.

The web interface is always available for when you are away from you main machine e.g. internet cafe or similar and I persoanlly find the adds on the web interface pretty inobtrusive.

    Re: email hosting options

Just be aware that as with most Google things it's in perpetual beta stage. I don't have any real problems, but in the last 5 or 6 months that I've used them there have occasionally been outages. That said, their spam filtering is pretty awesome.

Remember to setup SPF for your domain too, if you haven't already.
