Angry Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

Im wondering if anyone else has got tiscali and is experiencing something annoying with them?

Heres a list of my problems, if anyone has got solutions id be happy to hear, apart from changing since im going to do that soon anyway

1.) MSN messenger -----> being sighned out randomly every 5 min ....twice in making of this post

    2) download speed ------> were paying for 2 meg, yes the router is plugged in to main bt socket etc but when i run speed tests it only says im getting 0.5meg, according to other providers my line is capble of doing 4.5meg

    3) Ping -----> my average ping for any games i try to play is 400

    4) customer services ------> they are all speaking some weird languach and have no idea what they are on about

I called them up to ask whats going on, they told me that this is perfectly fine. Theres nothing wrong with my internet at all etc

    Any ideas?

Re: Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

I am also with tiscali, i thought it was just me :

    1) does that with me all the time
2)exactly the same as you, i just presumed it was because we live ina village though and not in the city.
    3) yep my ping is often higher than 400
4)customer service = they are all based in foreign countries.

yep they said the same to me when i called them up. It is my dad who pays and they persuaded him its just because we live outside of the town... perhaps they are right, who knows? its sure anoying tho. i know how frustrating it is.

Re: Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

While I had tiscali, they were ok-ish, signed up for 256k (when broadband was still relatively new) and over the years got upgraded to 2meg. However the throughput was nowhere near that, and the connection wasnt reliable at all (had to resort to dial up a couple of times.) With talktalk now, and I actually havent had a problem with them at all. (with the exception of tech support, but thats the same for most companies nowadays )

However, cancelling a tiscali contract is a pain in the ******* ass. Gave them the notice they required, 6 months down the line and we were still being billed for it (even though everything had been handed over to talktalk 4 months before) then took another 2 months to get it sorted and refunded.

Re: Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

My friends down the road from me had all the issues you've been having and guess what... they're on Tiscali too.

I've started to stop supporting people who ring me at home needing help and they Tiscali and Talktalk as these are the 2 most common ISP's which people have issues with (in my area) and I haven't got the time to be spending 40-1 hour + a night explaining to them why the issues are arising.

It's all false economy really - you get what you pay for in regards to ISPS

Re: Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

I have seen all the issues with talktalk, but in my area, I havent really had a problem with them at all (touch wood.) I think tiscali have to be the worst ISP around now from my experience and what Ive read.

I had awful trouble with them so I ditched them and went with O2.

I think that Tiscali have shocking DNS servers to; I recently helped out some friends who were having hellish internet problems with tiscali. Web pages took 5 or 10min to load, I put them on OpenDNS and they were fine but they have since changed to sky.

My main problem with tiscali has been their customer service.

So you being someone who is very up to date with internet ISPS, what would you recommend for a new ISP? and what would you say to my dad who is adamant that all ISPS are the same as Tiscali's? To persuade him to change i will need proof that we wont have problems with a new ISP tbh.

    Thunder, any help appreciated.

Re: Tiscali? being a pain in the *** again?

The advice I give is to check on www.thinkbroadband.com especially on their forums as they indicate all the issues most people have with ISP's.

Saying that, I'm on Bethere and it's been stable ever since installation. Bethere have been bought by telefonica and then they launched another division called O2 broadband and if your an O2 customer you get discount on the charges which is another bonus.

Before you take the plunge with O2, I would advise checking the forums on the above website listed as there are some rare instances of localised congestion on some exchanges which causes a few ping spikes and latency increases during peak times, but they are investing in more pipelines to remedy this issue.

I know how frustrated you must be as my friend and his sister couldn't even sign onto MSN for more than 4 minutes before they both got disconnected and then webpages started to take a while to load and then it started to timeout on some sites.

I'll be switching to O2 broadband though when I move in the next few weeks just to make my outgoings a little bit less as I need all the money I can gather at the moment
