Getting a domain name that's about to expire

Does anyone have any experience in getting a domain that's due to expire soon?

I'm mildly interested in securing a domain that's due to expire soon, currently registered with GoDaddy.com.

I'm not interested in paying over the odds for it so wondered on the best way to proceed. Should I just keep my interest quiet and wait to see if it gets dropped and becomes generally available, or should I try and place it on backorder through godaddy? Do expired domains genuinely end up back in the pot or do registrars hold onto them for themselves to resell?

I found this interesting piece on securing domains about to expire, but as it's quite old now I'm not sure how relevant the advice is today:

Again, I'm only really interested if it becomes available, not in entering into any auction or buying it from the owner if it gets renewed.

Any advice from anyone that's been through this process recently, maybe with a godaddy registered domain?

    Thanks for any advice.

If its for a large site the owner might have it on auto renew so you wont get a chance, if its not big or well known it might get abbandoned and you can get it. Best thing to do is wait up until it ends and then buy it

    It's 4.98*

Re: Getting a domain name that's about to expire

Nope, it's a minor domain registered by a shark who tried (and failed) to sell it on. I want to maximise my chances of getting it if he lets it lapse. I'm assuming there's a good chance he won't bother renewing it having failed to sell it on to the intended people. I guess I'll find out in the next couple weeks.

It's not of any real value other than to the people that want it, and they're not prepared to, or interested in buying it from a domain squatter. I'm trying to secure it on their behalf if it lapses.
