Comtrend 200mbps speeds

I am getting up to 3MB (Mbytes)/s max while I think in the past I could see up to 8MB/s which was more like the speed you should expect from a 200mpbs powerline adapter.
What speeds do you get (I am using Networx which is freeware to monitor speeds).

Power lines are useless for transferring data, they still use a 10/100 network card inside them, other electrical appliances can interfere and speeds are subject to how far they are apart.

I have tried them and Windows Vista 32Bit gave me 2Mybtes per sec. I have a trusty cable under the carpet that does the job through a Gbit router and now get around 25Mbytes per sec to my NAS.

I have 200Mbps power line adapters and I stopped using them.

If you want to transfer proper data over a network, use an ethernet cable.

Wireless and powerline are only really good for web browsing and and casual network connection. anything more than a couple of hundred meg should be done with grown up network hardware.

And what do you use instead?

Wifi is a no-no with 2 little children in the house (mobile phones also switched off during night time).
Cabling would be the best but hiding them would be quite troublesome not to mention almost impossible across floors.

I use ethernet. I currently don't have wireless at all at home, need to get myself a new AP at some point though as I miss being able to use my laptop in bed

A couple of things that will kill powerline ethernet: power extensions and jumping mains circuits.

If you have one ring main for upstairs and one for downstairs (for example) a powerline adapter on each ring main is going to get terrible performance. They should also be plugged directly into the wall, not on an extension, even if they are the only thing on the extension.

What exactly are you trying to transfer over your network?

Mainly video (720p) and the daily backups. I suppose for music even the 85mbps would suffice.
Got them plugged directly into the wall. I will try different plugs and see if there is a difference. I was wondering if they need resetting once in a while just in case they synchronise at a lower speed (85 instead of 200).

You will have to use a wired network to stream 720p video... I do the same through my NAS along with 1080p MKV's.

Give it a try and see how your network performs..

Around 8-9 MB/s over the wire (average while transferring a 1GB file). The router/modem is 10/100 so probably not bad (almost 2/3 of theoretical maximum rate).

If we got our calculators out and factored in the the various headers you'd probably find its actually a lot more than 2/3rds
