    Time to network the house!

    Right, my new house is nearly finished and ready for action. However I really would like advice on a new router and a couple of unmanaged switches.

    I have not cabled the whole house as it was not necessary but do have to wire up the consoles etc that will be in the TV room with the the office that will contain a number of computers!

    So- What is the best router currently? Looking for wireless-n as I will upgrade our lappies very soon.

    What 4-8 port gigabit unmanaged switches are good? I will need 2. One by the computers and one by the tv and consoles?

    Thanks for you help!!!

    I've had an 8-port 3com gigabit router for about 18 months now. Supports jumbo packets and works nicely.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Do you have a model number at all?

    Got the 5 port version of that 3Com Switch. Very fast, had no problems with it.

    Just got a Netgear GS108 (the blue metal case ones) 8 port gigabit switch a few days ago. Supports jumbo frames as well.

    Re: Time to network the house!

    I use a Netgear GS605 and 2x D-Link DGS-1005D. The bottleneck with transfers is always the HDD on the PC I'm using.

    If it's range your after, I'm really impressed with my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Has a built in amplifier for the wifi signal. Get great coverage around the whole house and garden. I'm running Tomato firmware on it.

    Re: Time to network the house!

    I've tested out a D Link wireless N access point from work before as I was curious to see if it would trump the Buffalo on range. It wasn't bad but was definitely not as good.

    Nice timing. Just about to do the same thing myself. Are Netgear switches any good? Looking the GS608.
