    WRT54GL on an ADSL2+ connection?

Hey all. Will try and be brief.

Have a WRT54GL (currently running stock firmware) that I've been using for a few months on Virgin Media 10Mb/512k connection, and I love it!

Given VM notice and I'm moving to an O2 20Mb/1.3Mb connection.

Is it possible to use my 54GL on the O2 connection with a seperate modem? (or maybe even use the O2 supplied router as such?) I've done some googling around and it seems possible, I see "half bridged" and other network mumbo jumbo that baffles me in what I find and not convinced that relates to what I want to do. Looking for comfirmation if this is possible/worth doing and some n00b pointers to get me started. Figure its easily gonna cost me £50 to replace it with something decent, so happy to invest in extra hardware and spend a bit of time fiddling.

    Cheers all.

I'll be doing the same very soon, although I'm using Tomato for the firmware.

The WRT54 has an Ethernet input / uplink. As long as the Modem does the magic before hand, it'll work.

I do this at the moment.
I user the 02 router as the DHCP and the 54G with tomamto for wireless etc.

Outstanding, thanks guys. That linky put me on the right track too, Agent, did some further googling and even found a thread on the O2 forum. Got some reading material for tomorrow and a vague idea on the process now.

Question is then.. Will I need to flash in Tomato or DD-WRT to achieve this? I should have done it already and that was the plan. But its been working flawlessly now since before christmas and just been enjoying not having to reset everything several times a day.

Re: WRT54GL on an ADSL2+ connection?

I would assume the default firmware can do this, as it's a fairly basic thing.

However Tomato is amazingly powerful and will give you so many options that you never knew you needed
IMO it is well worth flashing to. It's well known for it's stability

Re: WRT54GL on an ADSL2+ connection?

Thanks again, Agent. Did some further research and does look like the standard Linksys firmware will do it, will get around to Tomato at some point, but networking is not my thing, so hoping the standard firmware will make it easy for me and once we're all setup, I'll start figuring out Tomato.

Everywhere I go, these instructions seem to be the basis...

Assuming you guys are planning/have done similar? Or is there a more obvious approach I've missed?

    Cheers again, love this site!

Let me know how you get on, as I'll hopefully be doing the same within a month or so

Yep. I'm on Be* with a Linksys AM200 modem and WRT54GL with Tomato installed. Runs like a dream. Had some issues getting it all set up so that it worked but its sorted now.

Awesome. Did find lots of people pairing that modem up with the router. Plan is to see how far I get with the O2 box on the instructions I found above ^^, if all else fails will grab one of the AM200's for thirty squids off broadbandbuyer.

Cheers again all, surprised how many people are doing it!

Ok, gonna be setting this up within a couple of days and its just struck me. Am I going to need a Patch or Crossover cable for the connection between the O2 Router and my Linksys?

you can use a patch and the port should auto detect it but I would use a switch if possible.

    Ok, cheers.

Confused tho, what would be the benefit in using a switch?

Re: WRT54GL on an ADSL2+ connection?

Ok, after a few brown trouser moments, got it mostly working...

I followed these instructions to do it manually...
    http://adsl2forum.co.uk/showpost.php...4&postcount=76

Its working with the WRT54G (which needed no fiddling or settings changing). I have an internet connection and just need to tweak/turn off the O2 box settings for things like the firewall. What I cant do though is access the O2 box accross the LAN. I've done a reboot (just switch it on and off, right?) and also my WRT45G's default gateway is 192.168.1.1 which should match the O2 box.

Would be nice to have access to the O2 box though, have I missed something obvious?

Otherwise very pleased with my handy work, even if it did take me 20minutes to figure out telnet on Vista LOL!

Re: WRT54GL on an ADSL2+ connection?

Scratch that, all sorted with the help of my friend blatent luck. Have to use the O2 boxes IP address, not that silly O2wirelessbox.lan rubbish. (also connected a patch cable from port2 of the Linksys to port1 on the O2 box as it felt like a good idea, no idea if thats helping lol)

Seems to be working exactly as it should now anyway. Cheers again for everyones input.
