    Router Recommendations

Anyone know much about this router?

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-R...h-VPN-Firewall

looking to replace my belkin, which I think is on its last legs. Strength of signal and MAC address filtering are important to me, as well as ability to cope with more than 2 wifi connections and a decent number of connections for torrent/ emule. This is something where, IMHO, my old belkin falls down.

    Also, this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...plusTurbo-mode

Want to order it now, but it's less than £20, so will have to call scan tomorrow (re: free postage/ less than £20, etc)

The usb is for my HTPC, which is now up and running, but the generic usb wifi stick I have in it (which has no name on it, but seems to run on Ralink drivers) does not seem to want to work. Detects my network, but will not connect, saying router is not responding. This is a lie, as my laptop and pocket pc and wii don't have any problems connecting.

    Comments gratefully appreciated.

    Re: Router Recommendations

Never used, or heard of anyone using an MSI router, but for £25, I wouldn't expect it to be great.

The Edimax wireless dongle would probably be pretty good though. I like Edimax gear.

I would be tempted with this though: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...B-3dbi-adapter

    WRT54?
Install something like Tomato and you can alter the power output too

    Hmmmm..

Has to have modem built in. SOrry, didn't say that.

I was looking at some "best of" reviews on PCPro and what have you last night, which rave about certain items, but then you read customer reviews saying "wifi no good" or "dreadful experience", and you have to wonder whether they are ALL numptys.

I've had my current Belkin for... god, what, 5 years? More? It just feels like it's about to give up the ghost.

    Re: Router Recommendations

Depends on what ISP you have I suppose. I'm guessing ASDL2+ router right and from your posts with matty you're switching to O2? Get a DG834GT and have it flashed with custom firmware and get the best out of your service.

There is plenty of Ex-Sky units around that can be had for under £25 quid. Good solid units in my opinion.

Yep those too. As long as it's a working DG834GT it'll be fine

    Re: Router Recommendations

btw mac address filtering is useless. for wireless just use wpa2 with a strong passphase.

    Re: Router Recommendations

Well, see, most of my neighbours are either a) old b) clueless or c) inebriated, inbred chavs who typically tend to "own" a computer for the exact length of time it takes to steal said item, then flog it in the pub, so the odds of any of them being sufficiently determined to obtain MAC address masking software AND steal one of the correct IDS AND/OR tunnel into the router are fairly slim.

Unless I'm misunderstanding how one can do it.
