    Tracing Type Program

Say a rogue PC appears in my DHCP listings on a Windows Server. Is there any tracing software which can narrow it down to which switch and port number its on, or if its connected to a wireless point or something? Also if it can pull its MAC and other details it would be helpful.

Thought I might ask here as its a fount of knowledge which gives better results than Google sometimes!

The DHCP server should list the MAC address of the PC (its Unique ID), query your switches for it (assuming they're managed ones?).

Next evil trick is to reserve that MAC address an Off range IP or it's own dedicated gateway address

As above, if they're managed switches then query them (manually or write a script to do so via SNMP if it's a common problem and/or you have a lot of switches). If not then get a ping (or arping if it's dropping ICMP echo requests) going to the rogue device and get unplugging until you narrow it down to a specific switch and then finally the port. Crude and far from ideal but works.

Once you've done that look at your DHCP server config to prevent handing out leases to devices that shouldn't be receiving them anyway and possibly putting port security on the switches if available.

You probably already know this (but in case you don't) when you have the MAC there are a range of useful sites such as http://coffer.com/mac_find/ that will show you the manufacturer of the hardware.
