    tiscali + download warnings

I love to download and stream alot off stuff but recently i got a warning off them for exesive use

    Dear Customer,

This email contains important information regarding your broadband account.

Your broadband Internet usage has been highlighted as exceptionally high
during peak periods and is affecting the service that we provide to other
    customers.

All of our users have the right to an acceptable quality of service, and
to ensure this Tiscali employs a Fair Use Policy
    (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/fup). This gives Tiscali
the right to manage customers whose usage adversely affects our network
and the service of other customers. This is referred to in clause 8.4 of
the Terms and Conditions of our Broadband service (note clauses 5.9 in
the old Terms and Conditions if you registered before 2005) and
detailed in our Fair Use Policy (http://www.tiscali.co.uk/fup).

    You may upload and download as you wish outside the peak hours;
however we ask that you are considerate when using the internet
during the peak period. Peak hours are from 6pm to 11pm Monday to
Sunday. To avoid any further heavy use warnings
we strongly recommend you adhere to the following guidelines:

    o) Do not download large files during the peak periods

    o) Do not use Peer-to-Peer file sharing software during peak
    periods (e.g. Kazaa, BitTorrent)

    o) Try and keep internet use to email and web browsing during these times.

If you do not reduce your usage during these peak times we
will manage your usage. This means that you will share
bandwidth with other heavy users during peak times instead of
sharing bandwidth with normal users. Your service will continue
to be unlimited, but by sharing bandwidth with other heavy users
you are likely to experience slower speeds during peak times.

If you have a query regarding this letter then you can
    email broadbandservices@uk.tiscali.com

Important Note: When emailing please use your Tiscali email
address (username@tiscali.co.uk) and use the following reference
in the subject line "FUP Warning1". It may prove difficult for us
to process any queries or requests without this information.

    Yours Sincerely

    Tiscali Broadband Team
it amuses me that much sorry

i was just wondering on your thoughts, if i have the following issues right now

my ping is usually 400+ including middle off the night
my internet speed is more off 0.5meg when im paying for 2meg
i constantly get kicked from games and msn as plenty off packets are lost

    Question!

can it get any worse, if they do put me on their "heavy users" bandwidth?

Not sure if they'll be throttling you or blocking certain protocols but I can say that 300 ping is quite bad, but you should be pinging UK sites not US ones.

Getting 20ms here and facebook was 100ms. It's most likely Tiscali's fault there . Reading your OP it seems that if you get put with the heavy users think of it this way, imagine you're in a flat sharing your net with your flatmates. Being on that heavy users list/connection is like being on the shared net in your flat with 1 of your flatmates or a few of them uploading/running torrents all the time. You'll just be fighting for bandwidth (with the other heavy users). So yeah it'll be worse I think.

    Re: tiscali + download warnings

They will start throttling you or move you to same area the other heavies are on, and then yes - you will be the bottom of the bottom.

I dont see how you would be able to exceed a normal FUP on a connection like that.

I'd honestly tell your dad to switch provider.

As to the Virgin Media bashing - Im THRILLED with VM, i get FULL 50Mb from them over fibre. No other provider can provide me over 3Mb, even LLU services cant exceed this. The copper wiring and distance from exchange trash the speeds.

However ive heard more bad than good about VM, if you are considering switching to them research there performance in your area.

    My ping to google.co.uk - 16ms
    Facebook - 83ms

    Do you use a router?

Try changing your DNS to open dns you might get faster web browsing at least. I did this for some friends using tiscali recently and it made a huge difference.

    Re: tiscali + download warnings

Be warned, my brother managed to end up on Tiscali heavy user thing or whatever they do.. His 2Mb line dropped to ~80k and stayed there 24/7.. He also found it impossible to torrent, browse youtube, iplayer, or anything bandwidth intensive and had most of his ports crippled IIRC.. His own fault though as he discovered torrents and decided it would be a good idea to hammer the connection with them nonstop, bless!
