    Noisy phone line

    hellloooooo,
Im having a bit of a problem with the phone line at home - it is mega noisey. Hissing and crackling all over the place. Ive been through all the the usual and changed filters and phones i cant checke test sockets because I have a really old faceplate etc etc 99.99% the noise is why my router wont sync Has anyone else had simelar problems? and did it takes ages to solve? I have phoned BT who did say there was some migration work going on in my area but the fella on the phone didnt think that would be the cause of problem,

    Cheers

    Re: Noisy phone line

f BT are the provider of your voice services, you can raise a fault report in respect of that (it sounds as if water is getting into a junction box) and BT will do a line test and investigate (through BT Openreach). They may even replace your line box for you! I would recommend that approach first.

Otherwise you can approach your ISP about your internet problem, who will then raise it with the BT (BT Openreach - their broadband section). But that may take longer.

I would raise the fault on the voice problems first and get those resolved - if that doesn't fix the internet problem, raise a fault with your ISP. (In either instance you cannot raise a fault directly with Openreach - you do not have a contract with them - they are a service company within the BT group)

what Peterb said. BT have a duty to offer you a good line for talking, so make sure they know how noisy it is

    Re: Noisy phone line

I had the same problem, BT were reluctant to send an engineer out, just test with another phone to be sure then ring them up and say its done it with multiple phones and differnet filters and so fourth.

I ended up with a new pair all the way back to the box as, apparently water had got into the line.

    Re: Noisy phone line

IS the noise only there when the router is plugged in or all the time?

This is pretty important as it will determine were the fault lies.

If the nose is there when only the phone is plugged in with no router then the fault is with BT retail(phone supplier) RIng them up do not mention that the line is used for BB as they will try and palm the issue off.

If the noise only happens when the router is plugged in then you most likely have a high open fault. TO get this resolve you`ll need to call your isp.

IF you have an old style face plate then you should be able to ring BT and get them to fit an NTE5 socket for no charge.

I'm going through near enough the same problems. They have resolved slightly on their own accord, but I'm going to phone later and say rain causes the problems.

been there as well, twice now at dads house, trees in the line weaken the cables until the contacts nearly gone.

keep chasing for updates and dont forget to ring up for credit when its fixed due to the downtime.

    Re: Noisy phone line

When my line was so noisy it was impossible to hear what the caller was saying it only took 8 months, over 15 engineer visits and several letters/emails to some obscure 'complaint' department. And all that was after about 10 call's to the comically useless Indian call centres who just keep telling me there was no problem, or telling me to reboot my router over and over, even when i had to repeat myself due to the noise on the line. It was quite surreal.

In the end i just had to pester and pester and pester them. BT are by far the most incompetent company i have ever dealt with.

But wait, the saga is far from over for me... As part of the work they did, they replaced some rotten underground cable with some standard thin cable which they simply draped along the hedge near my house. When the hedge cutter comes along they obviously cut the cable - 3 times the cable has been cut in the last two years (would have been 4 if the farmer had not noticed it). Each time BT come out, talk to me like i am a trouble maker, promise a more permanent solution, then bugger off again until the line gets minced again.

To top it all off, this started back in 2006. Every night i get a text message from BT saying "we are still working on your line..." at 7pm (5pm on sundays). I will get one tonight as usual, nice to hear they are still hard at work...

    Re: Noisy phone line

I have often found the quiet line test where you dial 17070 useful.

You can plug a phone straight into the master to see if there is any external noise. If there isn't you suspect internal wiring you can connect everything up again dial 17070 and get someone to wander round the house wiggling cables and plugs.

It is good for POM before you are call in the engineer and risk £200 or whatever they charge you now.

    Re: Noisy phone line

Thanks for that bandit, could I check exactly what i do with the 17070 number?

I have checked all my kit as best I can changed filters etc, tried different phones etc all the stuff BT suggest the noise is still there it's a really audible hissing, static, crackle if that makes sense and sometimes there is no dial tone or a very low level one.
This happens when I have just a phone and a filter plugged in - if I was to ring 17070 what would that tell me if the noise was still present? (which im sure it will be)

I have checked the track fault page on the BT website today and they have closed the call without even telling me why or what they have done. Im assuming they think there is no problem with the line but there definatly is personally I have a hunch that it could be the master socket itself as its a really old one or it could be BT mess up. The 1st guy i spoke to said some migration was going on in my area and although it shouldnt have caused my problem he was going to have to pass it to them to look at... Im not the best complainer in the world and i really dont like being rude to people but dont know how best to get this sorted - do i just tell them to send someone round at a cost of £200? Dont see what else i can do really.....

    CHeers for any help

    Re: Noisy phone line

The quiet line test is just that.

It gives you a line as though u ahve made a call to noone so you can hear the noise.

ITs an engineering testing tool really.

Your best to ring BT retail again and force for an engineer to come out. Tell them there is loads of noise on the line and its unusuable. If its a bt fault then you shouldnt get charged. The charges are usually only dished out if the fault is with your equipment

If you plug a telephone directly into your master socket (no filters or anything else) and the noise is still there then it will help to confirm that the problem is out there in BT land.

The 17070 quiet line test just gives you silence and helps you to listen for hissing and cracking - if the line is OK you should hear none of that. If the noise is still there you can call the BT engineer in confidence because as Kopite correctly says BT don't charge you if the your kit is not at fault.

I would also try it with a different phone just to be sure.

If you were to find that the line was quiet then that would indicate that there is a problem with your internal set up and time to go and check your extensions and filters.

(Incorrectly placed filters can make your phone line quiet and crackly and effect your internet connection speed - always worth double checking epecially if you like me and have extensions running all over the place.)

BT replaced the box on the pole opposite from us, because we could hear next doors phonecalls on our phone...

Apparently the box was full of water.
