O2 Box II - Worth replacing?

As title, and if so - what with?

It'll be hooked up to a WRT54 running Tomato, so only thing thats really of importance is the maximum sync speed / line tweeking.

    DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A
    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,239 / 6,653
    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
    Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
    Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 21.5 / 41.0
    SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 5.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
    Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 4 / 0
    Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
    Loss of Link (Remote): 0
    Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 25 / 0
    FEC Errors (Up/Down): 309 / 5,465,475
    CRC Errors (Up/Down): 309 / 1,930
    HEC Errors (Up/Down): 2,090 / 1,611
Line stats - nothing amazing. Not that close to the exchange

I'd only replace it with something like a Draytek Vigor 2700 - other items from Netgear etc are likely to be much of the same...

Re: O2 Box II - Worth replacing?

The further you are or lower speed you can attain, the less need to switch routers unless the supplied router is unstable or misses features that you need.

I gained about 1.5Mbps going from the supplied Bebox to Netgear DG834GT, but I was already syncing around 18-19Mbps with the supplied bebox.

Re: O2 Box II - Worth replacing?

I would have said the usual DG834GT...

Ive just got one off the 'bay to replace my BEbox.. which will then be bridged into a vigor2820n (the vigor syncs 2meg slower than the bebox.. but the bebox keeps resetting and has terrible wireless) - apparently the netgear with bit of tweaking and DGTeam will be faster than the bebox.

For maximum sync speeds, you'll need a router that uses the same Broadcom chipset as the Be/02 supplied item, as others might not be fully compatible with their DSLAMs.

There's a few suggestions and links in the thread here that might give you some ideas.

BTW, from your stats, I'd guess your line quality might be the limiting factor rather than your distance from the exchange - I have a slightly higher attenuation than you but also a higher downstream SN margin, and my BeBox normally syncs at about 8000kbps down.

Absolutely - I have a friend whose BeBox is in the next room to his PC, and inSSider shows a stronger signal from a Belkin router in the adjacent building 20 yards away through several thick walls...

Re: O2 Box II - Worth replacing?

Dunno if you remember my thread, Agent? My WRT54G has been bridged with it for weeks now, not had one single issue and have zero complaints. From my limited knowledge base in this kinda thing, I would say stick with it unless you really want the tweaking bits and bobs you'll get in something more fancy. Alot of peeps seem to use a modem, rather than a modem/router.. Can't remember the specific one everyone was raving about, should be in my thread ( http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...onnection.html ) somewhere. (its late, I'm lazy, etc)

ooh question.. How are you pulling all those line stats? All I can get is sync speeds. :S

    No problem
If you had Be* you'd probably get the full 24
