Need new ADSL router with more range

    Hi
I have been persevering with my old D-Link 604GT for literally years, and while it has not failed despite being switched on almost permanently, I have moved my PC to the opposite end of the house and connection has suffered.

Can anyone recommend a unit that will offer me greater range? I presume if I go for wireless N then I will need an equivalent dongle to update my PC which does not have that standard.

Anything else I should be factoring in to future-proof myself, bearing in mind that I intend to use the new one for a fair few years?

Budget is an issue, i'll spend what I have to but I don't want to shell out too much. It doesn't have to be the latest model etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    Julian
PS: I live in the sticks and get only "standard" bb connection, nothing ultra-fast, but I don't do gaming or much high-bandwidth downloading anyway.

I believe that wireless N will give you a better connection over a larger range than wireless G (and faster). But that does cost and yes you will have to buy a wireless N dongle/card for your PC. I have a wireless G router that I have put custom firmware (DD-WRT) onto, and made the signal stronger. Just another option worth looking at if you can do it to your router.

Thanks for that. I have seen a cheap Wireless G Mimo unit available, but not sure its worth it even though its discounted. N is the way to go I guess, as you suggest. I had considered homeplug type things, but am not sure they're any good.

Actually, one really simple thing I haven't tried is to move a phone unit away from the vicinity.

In the mean time I have a hefty 20m cat5 running up the stairs, along the landing....

To get the full benefit from MIMO, you need MIMO adapters at both ends of the network... i.e. a new router and a new adapter for your PC, if you're buying two pieces of MIMO kit, you're getting toward the cost of wireless 'N'.

It might be worth looking at bigger aerials, but you can also improve things a little buy putting a little distance between the antenna and the PC, using an extension lead so the antenna doesn't pick up interference coming from the PC.

If your old D link is doing a good job for the ADSL keep it and buy a Wireless Access Point with HUGE aerials.

Re: Need new ADSL router with more range

Well, the D-Link doesn't have a reliably great range downstairs either, and has started dropping connection, although that is in all probability not the unit itself.

Do you have an example of a decent wireless access point? never come across them before.

Unfortunately I am using the built in wireless of my pc, the antenna is within the casing. The Mimo unit i've seen does come with a usb receiver thrown in though. That said, for the same price I have now seen a brand new D-Link Wireless N adsl router plus brand new receiver for 40 quid. It's the D-Link 2740b as mentioned in another thread. Rated?

    Cheers

    Julian

Re: Need new ADSL router with more range

Hey Jules, Was a 604t we had as well and it started dropping the connection also, would basically allow you to access whatever you was on eg a game, but the other connections would drop and required a hard reset.

Mixed feelings about the 2740b so far, connection strength and quality are excellent on standard G, could only get the wireless N to connect at 130mbps (id imagine i could get it up higher if it was in N only mode) but since mine is the only PC in the house that supports it iv'e left it in mixed b/g mode for compatability. Few problems have cropped up though, seems to have a few more black "spots" then the previous router with one of the PCs in the house refusing to see the network even though it detected the old one fine (router is in the same position btw) had to use a dongle ontop of the desk and it picks it up fine after that. The PS3 also seems to have mixed feelings even after opening the correct ports on the router, randomly dropping the connection. Though performance on the PCs themselfs is flawless. Current uptime stands at 19hours.

    Overall probably a 7/10

    Worth £30 though Jasp?

I mean, all I'm after is range. Boosting the bitrate by a huge amount is a bonus, but i'm only on a basic BB connection and it is only for general browsing etc.
