    Exchange upgrade programme

Hi. I'm in Cheltenham and am told by BT that my line will only allow 1mbps broadband speed. This is slow, but will not change until the equipment or the line length is changed. How do I find out if and when this will happen?

For information on your exchange, have a look on http://samknows.com

However, if you are limited to 1mb at the moment, I don't think ADSL2+ will help you as it has a much charper drop off for connection speed than regular ADSL, meaning that once you get to a line that can only handle 4mb or less on ADSL, ADSL2+ is the same.

    Re: Exchange upgrade programme

The distance from your home to the exchange is crucial. I have found that what the ISP told me what speed I would get be quite inaccurate. With Sky, I was rated 512Kbps but I get 4Mbps on an ADSL line 4.25km from the exchange which is quite far. Your exchange seems to be rated for ADSL too.

    Re: Exchange upgrade programme

Many ISPs show about 1mbps if you run their checks and I know that this is untrue in many cases. I connect at 1.7 - 2.0; I know that the line can run at 3mbps but ISPs say 1meg.
As they've been slapped for claiming too much, I reckon that they give a low speed then we're pleased if it's twice that.

yep AOL did that to me I was on the 2Mbps getting 2Mbps but when I phoned to get the 8Mbps servive they told me my line only handled 1Mbps, there was no way of getting them to understand that I was getting double that do begin with
