Disconnected from wireless network when streaming/downloading files

    Hi all,
this has been a problem that has been around for a while but only now it is starting to annoy me. It seems to happen only on my gf's wireless network. When I try streaming media (youtube, iplayer), I am disconnected from the wireless network and then my laptop would re-connect afterwards. The same thing happens when I am downloading files, even a 1 meg download would be cancelled. It doesn't happen to any of her housemates, so I find it rather strange.

I am running Win XP Pro SP3, on a Intel wireless card and the router is a Linksys. Does anyone have any suggustions?

    Many thanks

Does it happen even when you are close to the router (good signal) and have you tried updating your wireless card drivers?

Re: Disconnected from wireless network when streaming/downloading files

    Hi,
well it's strange actually. Even when I'm in the living room, where the router is 5 meters away from, I have a low signal. It's the same when we're in her room, which is on the 2nd flloor (big house I know).

I recall that I didn't have this problem when I first got the laptop, but I had to re-install XP after updating to SP3 and zone alarm was going in an infinate loop so that I could not even get to the login part in safe mode. As far as I know, the drivers are up to date. They were released in 2005, and my laptop is a Dell Latitude D400 which uses an Intel Wireless 2100 Mini PCI adapter.

    Ben

You could have a go at checking for newer drivers. One way to do this is Start>right click on My Computer>Hardware tab>Device Manager>check the list for your wireless card which should be under network adapters>right click then click Update driver...
Let it connect to Windows update and if there's a newer driver let it install and reboot.

have you stuck your service tag in to the dell website to see if they have any driver updates?
