Help configuring router with my Virgin Cable modem

A friend set this up for me a while ago but Ive recently upgraded my computer and am banging my head against a brick wall here.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS wireless router but I want to connect my computer via ethernet. I plug the lan cable into port 1 on the router, the cable from the modem to the internet port on the router. I restart the modem and the router but Vista gives me local access only!

Can anyone help out a complete networking noob?!

make sure you power the modem down for 10 mins or so to allow it to lose the MAC address bind.

Re: Help configuring router with my Virgin Cable modem

Are you giving the modem long enough to finish it's power-up diagnostics before you start the router? if you don't let it finish it's startup, the router won't get a valid IP address from the modem. Or at least, that's the way each of my Netgear routers has worked, but I don't know the Linksys.

Re: Help configuring router with my Virgin Cable modem

do a full reset on the linksys (hold reset for 60 seconds whilst it is off)

plug the leads in, and power them both on at the same time

wait 30 seconds, now try the net..

failing that, login to the router and have a poke

Never power the modem at the same time as the WRT54GS as it will never get an ip address from the modem. I had the same setup for years till the router died losing all wifi :/

As people have said, power the modem on and wait for it to do its thing, can be 30 second to a minute. Once that's done, reset the router to default as others have said then log into the router and set it up as you want it.

But if you do reset the router to defaults, make sure you have any account details (like VM account name) it needs first. The way I read slinger's comments, he didn't set up the router, his friend did.

Unless he's sure he knows what those details are, be wary of resetting to default unless you really need to.

He's on a cable modem not adsl so he doesn't need virgin account names and the like its a direct connection

I know he is. I've spend about 10 years on NTL/VM and certainly needed the account name. I know next to nothing about ADSL, having been an NTL customer since they first put cable in. And for me, no account name in router = no connection. The name went in the router, not the modem. That was direct connect and, IIRC, no user intervention required.

Yep same here, been on Virgin Media since it was Telewest in 2000. Never once needed a username or password for a router. Only time a username was needed for me was to access the Telewest Email and Personal web space.

Recently though it's not needed for the Virgin Media ADSL either as I set my uncles up last weekend and it was a plug in and play affair with a few minutes to set the router up for him.

I wonder if Virgin have just kept the old network settings and infrastructure depending on network and location, with the only thing that ties them together being the Virgin name itself.

Re: Help configuring router with my Virgin Cable modem

Dont think it is the router/modem problem It seems more like Vista getting its knickers in a twist again.

Try telling Vista to connect to public and private networks. sounds like it is set to connect to private only.

Common fault of the Linksys WRT54GS it gets to a point where it falls over and you have to start from scratch with it. I got this about 2 - 3 times a year with it. Was the same for a handful of others with the same router and the 20mb service in our area.

Glad to see you got it sorted. And yup, like so many things, simple once you know.
