    Signal strenth test

I have been thinking about getting a wireless router so that i can have access in my room which is second floor of the house (or its the third floor if you count the ground floor as the first). Is there some way i can measure the signal strength i would get in my room before i go and by a wireless router?? I got a great mobile phone signal but very poor tv signal (analogue) non-existent digital!!

I don't know if there is some device or something!

The simple answer is no. Different devices will give you different signal strength in different directions, and location of the router wil also make a big difference.

Does it have to be wireless or is Homeplus an option?

Homeplus?? Thought it was called home plug or am i wrong ?

I have looked at home plug (that was my first option)! But I would need four plugs which would cost a lot!!

Plug 1- cable from modem to it.
Plug 2- to connect main home pc up.
plug 3- to connect my pc upstairs.
plug 4- for my sister to use or anyone else!

Was also looking for a hassle free plug and play one! Found one but then looked at the back and it went on about the 5 min installation etc

Going to get some sleep after my night shift will have a look at this homeplus thing.

    Re: Signal strenth test

Is there a homeplug kit that has one adapter with two ethernet ports and the second adapter just having one???

The reason i ask is that my modem is right by the home pc! Now looking at the homplugs I only see one ethernet port which would mean having two next to each other, to connect modem to one and then another to connect up to home pc. I would then have another upstairs for my second pc.

    Hope that makes sense :|

Yep, I meant Homeplug. As for connecting more than one PC up - you could just pick up a cheap 4 port switch and use that - hang it off the plug if necessary.

So would I run a cable form the modem to the 4 port switch then one to a homeplug and another the the 4 port switch to the home pc???

Hmmm this could be pricey need 3 homeplugs too lol Time to do some more research!

edit: I assume a 100 Mbps ethernet switch would be ok? Or should i be looking at the 200 Mbps ?

100Mbps is fine. The Homeplugs that claim 200Mbps are *very* dependent on wiring type and condition in the house, and I doubt you will ever see anywhere near that.

I've seen the Zyxel ones work ok, but tbh pretty much any of the branded ones should be fine. Keep an eye out for the BOGOF type offers which places like Amazon and eBuyer put on from time to time.

    Re: Signal strenth test

If you don't go down the homeplug option, I once ran a wireless g network in a very large victorian three-floored house for 6 PCs without any problem. The signal strength for the furthest rooms was reasonably weak, but was still faster than the internet connection. Obviously it wouldn't be any good for file sharing/streaming though. Maybe a draft N router would be sufficient?

Also been looking at the N1 wireless routers Belkin offer. At the moment the wireless router is the cheaper option http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/351131...r/Product.html

Got a month or so to decide so will explore both options!

    Re: Signal strenth test

I use 2 Belkin homeplug AV adapters to get the internet downstairs in my place, I have the wireless router upstairs with kiss box and homeplug plugged into it and the other homplug downstairs plugged into an 8 port switch in my room with 360, server and desktop all running happily across the connection.

    Heres the ones I use

Only thing holding me back is the fact i'm looking at £60 to £80 for at least 3 homeplugs. Plus another £15 for a port switch thing. Just thinking is it worth it when a wireless N1 router would cost £70. Still got a month to figure what to go with.
