Jumbo frames and samba (ubuntu) problem

After new install of Vista, when jumbo frames is enabled, I cannot access the networked samba share on my ubuntu box.

MTU is set to 7000 with ifconfig on the Ubuntu box.

When I set jumbo frames to 7k in device manager under the NIC's properties and I cannot access the networked samba shared drives! When I disable jumbo frames (and leave the MTU at 7000 on the server) it works fine, but at slow speeds (11mb/s).

    Any ideas?

Re: Jumbo frames and samba (ubuntu) problem

You should be getting considerably more than that even with the default Ethernet MTU. Your bottleneck problem there isn't frame size at all

Hmm. What else could it be?

I shall recheck that the ubuntu box is connecting at 1000mbit (I am sure I forced this on)

Re: Jumbo frames and samba (ubuntu) problem

the kernel and nic should really be autonegotiating gigabit rates without arm bending, it could be a driver problem, or a dodgy switch/nic. Check out dmesg to look for any signs of driver or nic errors. Or it could just be Vista being the problem, install the latest NIC drivers on it, install SP2, and disable or uninstall the IPv6 stack (unless you're using it).

Re: Jumbo frames and samba (ubuntu) problem

IPv6 is disabled, I have SP2, I have tried with the 2 different onboard NICs (with latest drivers) so I don't think its a Vista problem.
I don't see anything odd in dmesg either (but I am not sure what I am looking for)... Any other ideas?

Re: Jumbo frames and samba (ubuntu) problem

If you have virtualbox installed on your Vista machine uninstall it, it has a bug which causes hard throttling even on host network traffic.

Also, see how things go with Jumbo Frames disabled on both machines.

Other than that, I can only suggest updating your Ubuntu server to 9.04 to make use of the e1000e Intel NIC drivers which are the proper ones which should be used with your PCIe NIC. If you don't want the hassle of a full distro upgrade, try digging around launchpad and see if you can find a backported 2.6.28 kernel.
