This is the problem, there are forums full of VM users who all download outside of their policed hours and the throttling still takes place. At one point when they first brought it in, I was throttled for 3 weeks solid until they admitted they had made a mistake with the account.

Re: Anyone else noticed VM are poo?

as soon as the brought in these caps my 20Mb dropped to 0.5Mb and they told me there was nothing they could do. I still have 2Mb as a back up line and as soon as I dropped from 20Mb to 2Mb I went from 0.5Mb to 2Mb.

Yeh thats the main excuse now, its "up to" 10mb they keep telling me so basically the throttling doesnt mean anything now.

If there is any technical limitation (like in ADSL I understand perfectly why the further away from the exchange the less bandwidth you will have and you only get the full advertised bandwidth if you are less than 200 metres away) they are welcome to use that excuse, but for traffic shapping? I think this is an issue for Ofcom!

Ofcom think "unlimited=ISP defined fair amount of consumption" so don't hold your breath. I have been traffic shaped several times and it's quite annoying, Virgin would argue it's a a necessary evil in these network congested times. I think they should be looking at users who continually abuse the traffic limits rather than users who just go over the limit now and again. The limits are not realistic considering the data sets available for download nowadays.....not even a windows beta test and you're over the limit!!

I think they should stop advertising download speeds that their links can not sustain.

Re: Anyone else noticed VM are poo?

well I dropped down from 20Mb to 2Mb becuase I just needed a low end stable backup connection for VPN work etc.

The have now forced me to 10Mb... I ust want 2Mb, nothing more. Before my "upgrade" I got 2Mb at all times, no issues with it. No I have been forced to 10Mb I get his.

Re: Anyone else noticed VM are poo?

Exactly the same issue I had Jay.

Started with 2meg - was solid, always maxed out when downloading.
They upped me to 4meg - Used to hid the full speed often, with some small blips but pings were much worse.
I then got upgraded to 10 meg. It would only hit 10meg on silly hours in the mornings. Pings made some games utterly unplayable (TF2 for example). Worst of all was the absolute random traffic management.

I lost my rag when I went away for 4 days, switched off all equipment at my house at the power outlets, came back and was throttled. I phoned up right then and told them to disconnect me.

Modem cloning on VM is stupidly easy. I have little doubt that once a cloned modem has hit the limit, it'll do the same to the real one too. There is simply no other way that I could have been throttled that night.

Isn't throttling done by UBR and so the cloned modem wouldn't be on the same UBR right?

Yep, iv found VM worse then useless. Throttling for most of the day & then general crap speeds at night, that along with their arrogant useless customer service team has driven me away for good & im now looking at 02/be*.

It's going to depend on what method the UBR uses to throttle in the first place. I suspect no one but Virgin knows for certain.

i don't know about the throttling, but as far as i'm aware 2 identical mac's can't be on the same ubr at the same time.
