HELP anyone with a dual wan draytek router ? need help with 2930vn

as it states above i have the draytek vigor 2930vn dual wan router

i have a 20meg and 10 meg connection plugged in but no matter what settings i try i cant seem to get it going faster than the 20meg will allow on torrents

im trying torrents as i know you cant combine both modems speed due to different ip's but i know the likes of torrents this is not an issue due to many connections

i have tried different load balancing modes in the setup , according to line speed and auto weight configurations

im not sure what else there is to do , but i have seen reports of people doing similar with success

Actually for Torrents is IS an issue, because all Torrent connections are send directly to your IP. Unlike multiple HTTP requests, which can be sent out via different IPs, Torrents are linked to your IP address.

Torrents aren't fussy, no, because the file is broken up into little cunks, and those can be recieved in any order, etc. However, most programmers are lazy, and don't add provision for the fact that some people, such as yourself, will have multiple connections with different outfacing IPs.

Is either of the two connections in question a static IP, and can both modems be told to blind forward the traffic? This is the solution I am attempting to work out for my friend. The result is that the problem of load balancing is handled by the load software as normal, but there is only one outfacing IP.

Re: HELP anyone with a dual wan draytek router ? need help with 2930vn

my two connections are both vm connections one 10meg and the other a 20meg , i dont think they are static no but my own 20meg has had its ip for aslong as i can remember

there is a fair amount of configuration that can be done within the router for each wan port but trying to match it up with some other stuff is difficult for a networking noob like me due to different people using different terminology

i purchased the draytek to hopefully take care of all this in a nice neat package with wireless n but it seems a little more complicated than i thought , the instructions dont seem much help and there doesnt seem to be any guides to be found

Re: HELP anyone with a dual wan draytek router ? need help with 2930vn

On another note there is an alternative configruation. Two computers with BitTorrent clients in the DMZ between the multiple LAN router, one with two network connections and a small amount of storage (enough to store any torrents you are downloading), another which will be your "seed" machine, and has a very large amount of storage and three network connections.

So what we will end up with is a dummy, a NAS, and a client.

The client can access the media of the NAS by a directly coupled gigabyte crossover connection which only thing running will be a network share (alternatively you can couple this into the LAN side of the router if you wish to share the media between multiple clients, however this machine CANNOT be aware of the router on this connection, otherwise it will cause conflicts.

The NAS will also be connected into the DMZ between the modem of your major connection and router.

The dummy download will be connected into the DMZ between the modem of your minor connection and the router.

The dummy and the NAS will use their remaining network ports to crossover link each other.

The dummy and the NAS will use their torrent clients to download the same torrent, while being told to maintain a connection between one another over the cross over connection. (I believe this can be done, but it needs to be done carefully).

Once the torrent is downloaded, the NAS continues to seed but the dummy client deletes the content and torrent data.

Result is that when they are downloading, if one the dummy client gets a packet the the NAS does not have (and visa versa) they will automatically be able to download it off each other at much higher speeds. It won't result in such an effective speed post as one outfacing IP, but it will result in a potentional speed boost.

If however you can get the modems to blindly forward the traffic and for your router to handle the nitty gritty of IP, DNS, etc, then you'll be much better off.

Re: HELP anyone with a dual wan draytek router ? need help with 2930vn

thanks for your reply guys , it does look quite hard to use the draytek i think im just gonna sell it and go for 50meg since this little experiment wont be very easy an probably more hassle than its worth

nightkhaos i was going to build my own firewall with components from linitx but i decided for sheer neatness and space i would just get the draytek as i didnt fancy having to play with linux or bsd again , i have no time for that just now

    bugger !
