    802.11b & 802.11g work together?

Basically I have a 802.11b wireless router which I would like to upgrade 802.11g, but my old laptop that I've just sold to my housemate has a 802.11b PCMCIA card.

Basically are they both compatible with each other ie a 11g router (54Mbs) with a PCMCIA 11b (11Mbs) etc etc

Yes, but you will have to make sure your router is working in mixed mode.

Also, for complicated technical reasons, when both B and G devices are on the same network, all devices are likely to suffer a slow down in speeds. Apparently later firmwire upgrades resolve this problem to some degree so check with your manufactuar for firmwire upgrades if your router is more than a few months old.

Actually, if your REALLY devious, you keep the 11b stuff and set it up as a honey trap.

Lock down the 11g (MAC and WPA) then broadcast the 11b on a different channel with a tempting name (Phat pipe / 1megDSL or good old "Default" ). Have zero encryption on that AP, but have on old pentium or something connected. Have that machine loaded up with every damn virus you can think of.
