    Question Gigabit networking problems :(

    Hi folks,

I've had this problem on my PC (Win XP Pro SP3) for quite a while now. Basically it doesn't like connecting at gigabit speeds.

I've tried both onboard network cards with the latest drivers and now a D-Link DGE-528T PCI card. They all refuse to consistently sync at 1Gbps. I've tried replacement cables etc etc to no avail.

Everything else going into the switch (Netgear gigabit) shows as gigabit (green) but my PC just doesn't want to connect. Forcing it to 1000/100/10 just stops it connecting and with the D-Link even that just makes it connect at 100Mbps.

This has happened after numerous XP complete reinstalls and I've never got to the bottom of the issue.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers!

    Paul.

Have you tried updating the network card drivers in device manager?

    Re: Gigabit networking problems :(

Have you tried a known working cable? Not all patch cables are fully wired, some of the cables supplied with routers are only wired for 100Mbps, with 2 of the pairs connected, as that's all the router needs. As you probably know, you need all 4 pairs connected to get Gigabit connectivity.

    Re: Gigabit networking problems :(

If you have access to a cross over cable you could do a loop back test from one nic to the other on the same system, that would eliminate the switch as the cause of the problem. if you have access to a cable tester, test the cable (however this just checks connections not frequency problems from cable quality). Also note Cat 5 cables are not strictly gigabit capable so if your using a old cable this could be the problem. Cat 5e, Cat 6 and anything above that are acceptable.

    Re: Gigabit networking problems :(

    Cheers for the ideas folks.

    Drivers are up to date.
I made the cable and it's been used in other places for gigabit stuff without problems, cable is Cat5e.
The ports on the switch are fine as they've definitely been ok before.
The odd thing is the D-Link diagnostics show 2 of the pairs as unknown but that could just be because it's only synced at 100Mbps.

I've now ordered an Intel Pro 1000/CT PCIe card as I seem to remember never having any problems with a 1000/PT card I had. Basically the onboard Realtek cards started working properly for a while so I sold it.

I'll update once that's on and see what's going on.

    Re: Gigabit networking problems :(

Just for info I resolved this by using the said Intel NIC. Works fine....note to self, only ever buy Intel NICs

Do you know of any low-profile ones with a low-profile bracket? I'd like to get one for my Antec Minuet 350.

I am glad you got it working, its nice when problems can be easily solved by throwing a little money at them. Intel and Broadcom Nics are the best, It aways annoys me when premium (intel based) boards put a realtek nic on instead an intel one.

The Intel one I mentioned came with a low-profile bracket as well

oolon, yep it'd be nice if manufacturers realised this

Just to double-check, this is the card right? http://www.cclonline.com/product-inf...=expi9301ctblk
Also is there anywhere you would recommend getting it from ie cheaper?

You might want to look at the Netgear ga311

    http://www.technoworld.com/NETGEAR_G...9/product.aspx

(i haven't bought from this company - CCL don't seem to be listing them at the moment - however the card works well on botth Windows and Linux systems)
