    Odd wireless speed problem!

Got a belkin wireless n router and also the n adapter on my pc. Up till today i was averaging around 10mbps (its would drop to say 58 then back to 62 and then back to around 72) However, just now its saying 52mbps and low signal strength. Usually the signal strength is very good or good (with its going to low sometime, but always goign abck to good signal strength)

Last few days I have seen a message saying ' [network name] now connected' and I think it said unsecured. But I have all the security on (wpa2 etc) and a network key!! The speed tests are still reporting 9.3 mb line.

I'm lost as to what has suddenly cause the signal strength to stay on low and the speed not rising above 58.5 mbps

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

sounds like it might be a broken router

Question.... is the PC not connecting via a cable?

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Re-started the modem and router and all is back to normal. I hope the router is not faulty only had it 3 weeks

The network has one wired pc (which was working fine) and then 2 laptops and pc connected wirelessly.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Just a quick question- Is it normal for the network on my wireless pc to be shorter than that shown on my router settings page??

Am I right to assume that my wireless pc would leave a few numbers off at the end?

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

I noticed the DHCP Client list will not accurately update within the configuration of my Belkin router even after I refresh it. Is there a way I can clear this so the list accurately reflects only those computers currently connected to the wireless?

Also on the belkin router setup page i'm a bit confused as to why for the DHCP Server it says only 1 wlan client when there is a pc and laptop connected wirelessly, and one pc wired to the router. Should it not show 1 lan and 2 wlan ???? Do the devices connected only show up when being used e.g browsing the web?

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

    Should I worry about this:

On the belkin router homepage status page under lan settings the LAN/WLAN MAC address is different to any mac addres held by the pc's and laptop that are connected tot he network.

Any help on the issues i'm concerned with will be much appreciated

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Wow, what a lot of questions.
Just a quick question- Is it normal for the network on my wireless pc to be shorter than that shown on my router settings page??
Don't know what you mean. Do you mean the network key? If so, then while it is displayed as blobs the length is also masked, so don't worry.

I noticed the DHCP Client list will not accurately update within the configuration of my Belkin router even after I refresh it. Is there a way I can clear this so the list accurately reflects only those computers currently connected to the wireless?
The DHCP list should show all machines that have connected over the last few days. (The length of time varies by manufacturer and is called the DHCP lease time) Not sure if your router has anyway to forcably revoke a lease, but I wouldn't worry about it. You network has about 250 addresses available, you won't run out, and the router will tidy up.

Don't know. I am guessing that it will only show up as an active device if the routers NAT table currently contains entries for it. Which would mean that as soon as the PC (or laptop) accesses the internet it will appear on the list, it will drop off the list after some period of inactivity.

On the belkin router homepage status page under lan settings the LAN/WLAN MAC address is different to any mac addres held by the pc's and laptop that are connected tot he network.
Thats fine. Every device should have its own unique MAC address.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Sorry about all the question lol Buthave been working nights so my mind is not 100% atm.

Been chatting to the belkin lot and apparently the reason why my wired pc and two wireless laptops do not appear in the dhcp client list, and the wireless pc in my room does is to do with static ip addresses. Not sure how true that is?

Have had no end of trouble with the wireless n adapter on my pc upstairs. Few days ago seemed like it would loose connection once in a while (up till that I did not notice any loss). But tonight the connection has been very bad. It would disconnect then try to re-connect sometime not being able to re-establish a connection. Although the wired pc and two laptops have been fine with no issues (as far as I am aware). So I assume its the adapter on my pc thats faulty. Will see if Comet will give me a replacement (bought as a router and adapter bundle) tomorrow.

The strange thing is that my laptops g card (integrated) seems to get a better and more stable signal than the n adapter. The n adapter signal will change from very good - good - low and then back to 72 mbps at good or very good.

if you are using a static address then the dhcp is not assigning you one so it wont be there

I know this now but before I had no idea what dhcp was (very new to wireless connections)

Found some people who have the same problem with the n adapter from belkin here So will try a new adapter and let windows install from the disk. Just hope it will work. And I assume leaving those pc's/laptops with the static ip address is ok?

edit: The only other thing that could possible be a causing the problem is my mx revolution mouse receiver. Until middle of last week it was plugged in the back of the pc. But due not getting a gd signal and mouse lagging connected to a usb extender cable, and so it is now closer to the mouse + front of pc where the adapter is. I think the mouse operates on 2.4 ghz or something where as the router is set to 20ghz (think thats right) Thats the only thing that has changed! But I have been told that the mouse signals should not interfere with the wireless adapter.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

    Got to love night shifts!!!

Right.....................I may have found a fix! As I said I moved the mouse wireless receiver closer to the mouse because the mouse was getting poor response in games. The connection issues with the wireless adapter signal started last week!! So will try with a wired mouse to see if that proves to be a fix. The annoying thing is, is that the belkin adapter and mouse receiver are on different frequencies right? So I can't understand how the mouse receiver is no causing such issues!!!!!

Would changing the channel do any good??? Or would there still be some interference.

I know there is a lot going on in this thread but thats down to having little time at home with the problem. So thats why I have to ask so many question in order to go through a 'fix list' if you will.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

802.11g - the predominant standard for wireless networks uses the 2.4GHz un-regulated (almost) frequency range. For wireless this is broken down into channels that are 20MHz wide and seperated by 5Mhz.
802.11n does add another frequency range, but it can still use the very crowded 2.4Ghz range. I am not sure on the exact details of what bands it can use and in what combination they are normally used, but I am not suprised by a 2.4Ghz cordless mouse causing a problem.
Changing your wireless networks channel might help but check what other networks are around you, There is not point moving off of one crowded channel onto a more crowded channel!

I had some problems getting a stable connection to a PC upstairs in my house. I can see between 12 and 18 other networks! My laptop deals with it okay because it has a nice big arial (laptops normally run the anntenna round the screen), the PC is now wired.

Well my connection is now stable Switches between good and very good signal strength and 65mbps and 72mbps speed. Can't understand how logitech made that mistake
